BNZ, an independent power producer specialising in the development, construction, and operation of renewable energy projects, has signed a strategic agreement with Sungrow (renewable energy) to deploy 240 MWh of battery energy storage systems across two of its operational solar plants in the province of Viterbo, in Italy's Lazio region.

The deal, announced on 21 July 2026, names Sungrow as BNZ's preferred battery energy storage system supplier and forms part of a wider global framework agreement recently concluded between Sungrow and Nuveen Infrastructure, the parent company that owns BNZ.

Viterbo Solar Plants at the Centre of the Deal

The contract specifically covers the integration of energy storage into the Rinaldone solar plant, rated at 45 MW, and the Camposcala solar plant, rated at 53 MW, both of which are already operational in the Viterbo province.

The Rinaldone plant currently generates enough renewable electricity to supply approximately 16,000 households annually and avoids the emission of around 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year.

The Camposcala plant, meanwhile, produces sufficient clean electricity to meet the annual energy needs of around 17,000 people, with its output avoiding approximately 18,535 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.

The addition of battery storage to these existing facilities represents a step toward deepening the role that energy storage plays in BNZ's Italian operations, with the company identifying Italy as one of its earliest deployment markets for this technology.

Scope of Equipment and Services

The contract encompasses the full supply of battery energy storage system equipment, including batteries, containers, power conversion systems, and medium-voltage equipment. Sungrow will also be responsible for commissioning services, on-site acceptance testing, technical training, and a third-party energy management system.

Beyond the initial equipment supply, the agreement includes a Long-Term Service Agreement covering extended warranties for key components, annual preventive maintenance, and round-the-clock remote monitoring.

The service arrangement also includes performance, availability, and energy efficiency guarantees, providing BNZ with ongoing operational assurance across the deployed systems.

Italy as an Early Mover in BNZ's Storage Expansion

Italy occupies a prominent position in BNZ's broader storage rollout strategy. The company has identified close to 1 GWh of planned battery storage capacity across eight projects in Italy, concentrated primarily in the regions of Lazio, Sicily, and Puglia. The first installations from this Italian pipeline are scheduled to begin in 2026.

This Italian push sits within a larger European storage development programme. BNZ is currently developing 530 MW of battery capacity in Europe within a total storage pipeline of 850 MW. The company's multi-technology strategy, spanning solar, wind, and storage, already exceeds 2.7 GW in total capacity.

Strategic Significance for Both Companies

Luis Selva, Chief Executive Officer at BNZ, described the agreement as a strategic step forward in the company's commitment to energy storage as a key pillar of the energy transition.

He said that integrating batteries into projects such as those operated in Viterbo would allow BNZ to enhance grid stability and maximise the value of the renewable energy it produces.

Javier Izcue, Vice President of Sungrow Europe and the executive responsible for Southern Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, said the framework agreement with Nuveen Infrastructure represented an important step toward accelerating the rollout of energy storage across the continent.

He noted that Sungrow's PowerTitan solution, combined with a comprehensive long-term service approach, would support projects designed to bring greater flexibility, stability, and efficiency to the electricity system. Izcue also identified Spain and Italy as key markets in which the two companies would work together to drive the energy transition.

Context Within the Nuveen Infrastructure Framework

The Viterbo deal is underpinned by the broader global framework agreement signed between Sungrow and Nuveen Infrastructure, BNZ's owner. This arrangement provides the commercial foundation for the preferred supplier relationship between BNZ and Sungrow and is expected to facilitate further storage deployments across BNZ's European portfolio beyond the Viterbo projects.

BNZ describes itself as an independent power producer focused on the development, construction, and operation of renewable energy projects. The deployment of energy storage is identified by the company as one of its strategic priorities to further integrate renewable energy and contribute to a more flexible and stable power grid.

The Viterbo agreement marks a concrete step in translating that strategic priority into operational assets, with the two Lazio-region solar plants serving as the initial projects under the new supplier arrangement.
