Sun and wind now share a single site in the Southern Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate. Vattenfall opened the Hommerdingen-Biesdorf hybrid power plant on 30 October 2026, in the presence of Michael Ebling, the state's Minister for Economic Affairs, Tourism, Energy, and Climate.
According to the company, it is the first combined wind and solar park. Vattenfall has built one in Germany, bringing generation from both sources together under one roof and applying a concept the company has already operated for several years in the Netherlands and Great Britain.
What Has Been Built
The hybrid power plant consists of four wind turbines with a combined rated capacity of 17 megawatts and more than 12,000 solar modules with a rated output of 7.6 megawatts peak.
The installations sit on the territories of the municipalities of Hommerdingen, which hosts the wind park, and Biesdorf, which hosts the solar park. Both belong to the Verbandsgemeinde Südeifel, not far from the border with Luxembourg.
Vattenfall describes the project as a model for modern, cost-efficient, and grid-friendly energy generation and as a contribution to a fossil-free energy supply.
Two Power Plants, One Grid Connection
The central technical idea is that the solar park and the wind park are connected to the distribution grid of the regional operator Westnetz through a single connection.
The company explains that the solar park is treated technically like an additional wind turbine, so only one grid connection is needed for the entire installation. The connection runs via the wind park, and there is one shared grid connection point for both technologies. Westnetz agreed to this concept, which Vattenfall calls innovative.
According to Vattenfall, the generation profiles of wind and solar complement one another well, and using them together makes more efficient use of the distribution grid than either technology would on its own.
The company says this leads to better use of existing grid infrastructure and reduces the risk of grid overload. It also states that grid connection costs fall significantly compared with stand-alone installations.
Vattenfall adds that wind and sun complement each other over the course of the year and the day. Their counter-cyclical yield curves produce a smoother overall generation profile, which the company says makes electricity generation more even, raises security of supply and makes the power grid more stable.

The Minister's View
Speaking at the opening, Rhineland-Palatinate's economics and energy minister Michael Ebling called the park a showcase project for an intelligent, efficient and economical energy transition.
He said it demonstrates that wind and solar energy do not have to compete for scarce grid capacity but can complement each other sensibly. In his words, what matters is not only generating more renewable electricity but also integrating it as efficiently as possible into the electricity grids.
Ebling said that for such innovative solutions to catch on, reliable framework conditions, fast permitting procedures, and intelligent grid connection concepts are needed. He also said the project shows how entrepreneurial courage, technological innovation, and municipal engagement can work together.
The energy transition, he said, takes place locally, and people and municipalities should benefit from it through regional value creation. He expressed the hope that the project would find many imitators in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Vattenfall's Perspective and Next Steps
Catrin Jung, senior vice president and head of Vattenfall's wind business area, said the company was very pleased to have realized its first hybrid project in Germany, particularly because it was able to draw on know-how from earlier projects.
She said Hommerdingen-Biesdorf shows how the energy transition can succeed through the intelligent combination of wind energy and photovoltaics, the efficient use of existing infrastructure, and close cooperation among many partners in the region.
Jung said Vattenfall wants to continue this success story and plans to add storage to its renewable generation in the future, in order to make the renewable system even more flexible and robust.
Hybrid Parks at Vattenfall
Vattenfall uses the term "hybrid parks" for the combination of renewable generation plants such as wind and solar, but also for the combination of generation with battery storage.
In the Netherlands, the company operates a project called Haringvliet, which it describes as a full hybrid power plant that supplements wind and solar generation with an additional battery storage system. In Germany, Vattenfall also plans to add battery storage to solar parks, depending on local conditions.
Powering the Next Wave of German Energy Investment Starts With Better Project Intelligence
How do you spot the next major grid expansion, offshore wind farm, or storage development in Germany before your competitors do? In a power sector shaped by decarbonization targets, interconnector buildouts, and shifting national energy strategies, timing is everything, and incomplete information can mean missed opportunities.
