MT Group, acting as the general contractor for a 35 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) being developed in the Rietavas municipality, has completed all works required in preparation for voltage energization. The final battery capacity will be 150.45 MWh.
Construction Finished, Voltage Energization Prepared
The project is being implemented on behalf of Pure Energy Solutions under a contract worth USD 31.1 million. MT Group is responsible for the system's design, equipment supply, construction, and commissioning works.
The main aim of the project is to increase the flexibility and reliability of Lithuania's electricity system and to enable greater integration of renewable energy into it.
The project includes connecting the system to a 110 kV substation operated by Litgrid, Lithuania's electricity transmission system operator.
Balancing Renewables on the Grid
As electricity generation from renewable sources grows, storage facilities help balance electricity production and consumption: stored energy can be fed into the grid when it is needed.
The Rietavas system is intended to be used for frequency management and balancing services once the applicable technical and market requirements have been met.
Energy Vice-Minister Ignas Junevičius said that for the transformation of Lithuania's energy system it is important not only to develop local electricity generation but also to ensure the necessary capacity to balance it.
According to Junevičius, every Lithuanian electricity consumer will feel the benefits created by the fastest-developing storage facilities in the region, price jumps will shrink, and grid balancing costs will fall.
Projects such as the Rietavas battery energy storage system are an important part of this process and contribute to the reliable operation of the electricity system in the Baltic region, he said.
Rietavas mayor Antanas Černeckis described the project as a significant investment in the municipality's energy infrastructure. He welcomed the fact that modern energy storage solutions important for the reliability of Lithuania's entire electricity system are being implemented in the municipality, and praised the cooperation of the project's developers and contractors in creating advanced energy infrastructure in the area.
Pure Energy Solutions chief executive Artūras Jacikas said that when he began developing the project, he knew how important it was to find the right people and reliable partners, and that today he can see that it paid off. He said he was very happy to stand at the site and see the original idea become reality.

Contractor's Perspective
MT Group chief executive Mindaugas Zakaras said the opening of the Rietavas battery park is the result of the joint work of his team and its partners. As general contractor, the company takes responsibility for the entire project implementation cycle, from design and equipment supply to construction and commissioning.
He said the company values the client's trust and is proud of its team, whose engineering experience enables the implementation of projects important to Lithuania's energy system. According to Zakaras, the park will help manage electricity flows more flexibly and integrate more renewable energy.
Part of a Wider Project Portfolio
The Rietavas BESS project adds to MT Group's portfolio of energy infrastructure projects of strategic importance. That portfolio includes hydrogen projects in Vilnius and Klaipėda, the modernization of the Jauniūnai gas compressor station, work on a liquefied natural gas terminal in Germany, and a CO₂ capture project in Denmark carried out in cooperation with Ørsted.
MT Group is an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor operating in Europe, implementing large-scale energy and industrial infrastructure projects, including hydrogen, CO2 capture, energy storage, and natural gas and liquefied natural gas projects. The company provides services ranging from concept development and detailed design to construction, testing, and commissioning.
