October 2026 marks the full commissioning of the 520MW Koruson 2 cluster by Envusa Energy, a joint venture owned by EDF power solutions and Anglo American.

Full Commissioning Reached

The milestone is described by EDF power solutions as an important step in the private-sector partnerships dynamic that is emerging as a pertinent model in South Africa's electricity market. EDF power solutions and Anglo American both serve a decarbonization purpose through different means: the first is an international energy player, the second a leading global mining company.

Envusa Energy, the result of this partnership, develops and supplies renewable energy solutions at scale across a wide variety of energy-intensive sectors in South Africa, including mines such as platinum and iron ore producers, and industries.

Composition and Structure of the Cluster

Koruson 2 consists of one solar park, Mooi Plaats (240MW), and two wind farms, Umsobomvu (140MW) and Hartebeesthoek (140MW). The cluster is the first project in South Africa to be developed through a private platform. Revenues are secured through long-term power purchase agreements, and the project's financing structure comprises 85% debt provided by local banks.

Community Benefits and Black Economic Empowerment

Koruson 2 was structured from the outset to deliver tangible benefits to surrounding communities and to advance black economic empowerment. Pele Green Energy, an established South African independent power producer, holds a 20% equity stake in the three Koruson 2 project companies.

In addition, a Community Trust has been established, ensuring that local communities participate directly in the financial benefits generated over the 20-year operating life of each asset.

Grid Transmission to Industrial Offtakers

Beyond its scale and delivery, Koruson 2 is also notable for how the electricity is supplied. Power generated across the cluster is transmitted via Eskom's national grid to multiple industrial offtakers. Eskom is the state-owned national electricity public utility in South Africa.

EDF power solutions has leveraged its industrial expertise and long-term operating capabilities through Envusa Energy to respond to a changing environment in which private-sector demand has become a key driver of new capacity.

EDF Power Solutions' Presence in South Africa

EDF power solutions has been present in South Africa since 2009. The company will reach 1.5GW of installed capacity in operation in the country in 2027, including wind and solar power as well as batteries and innovative solutions.

Industry Reaction

Tristan de Drouas, Vice President Southern Africa at EDF Power Solutions, said: "The successful commissioning of Koruson 2, demonstrates that large-scale renewable corporate PPA projects serve the decarbonization of the mining industry, accelerating the energy transition in South Africa."

Powering South Africa's Next Decade: Stay Ahead of Every Grid Expansion and Generation Project

Every megawatt added to South Africa's grid begins long before groundbreaking, with a tender, a feasibility study, a contract award. If your business depends on spotting those moments first, fragmented news sources and outdated databases will keep you a step behind competitors who moved earlier.
