Econergy has acquired four operational battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK, totalling 106 MW, bringing its operational storage capacity in the country to 196 MW.

The company said it has acquired 100% of the shares in the holding company of the four assets, giving it full ownership and control. The portfolio is expected to generate approximately USD 6.29 million in EBITDA in 2027, before proposed augmentation work.

Augmentation potential

All four standalone BESS assets are commercially operational and currently configured as one-hour batteries, with potential to increase their storage duration to three hours.

The proposed upgrades would allow the projects to store more energy and dispatch electricity over longer periods, providing greater flexibility in response to changing power prices and market conditions.

UK portfolio expansion

The acquisition increases Econergy’s operational UK BESS capacity from 90 MW to 196 MW and takes its number of grid-connected assets from two to six.

Its existing UK operational portfolio comprises the 50 MW/100 MWh West Melton project, operating since 2024, and the 40 MW/120 MWh Dalmarnock facility, which connected to the grid on 1 October 2026.

Growth strategy

Econergy has a further 1.6 GW UK storage pipeline under development as part of its strategy to diversify its European portfolio across technologies and markets. Storage now represents approximately 45% of its total portfolio and 40% of its advanced portfolio.

Across Europe, the company has a 5.9 GW BESS portfolio, with 3.3 GW expected to be connected, under construction, or at the pre-construction stage by 2028.

Executive commentary

Econergy chief executive and director Eyal Podhorzer said: “We’re pleased to be purchasing these four projects, which represent a business opportunity with clear upside. The addition of 106 MW of operational storage capacity and the potential to augment the assets to three-hour duration gives us a pathway to build on the portfolio and develop its longer-term value. Alongside our existing assets and those in development, these projects strengthen our foothold in the UK and a growing platform for further expansion."

He added, "This acquisition reflects the way we are evolving our portfolio in response to the changing dynamics of European power markets. The UK has strong storage fundamentals, and its scale and market structure make it an important part of our wider energy storage strategy.”
