Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) conducted a successful hydrogen-blending test demonstration at the company's 805-megawatt CPV Towantic Energy Center in Oxford, Connecticut, the company announced on October 29, 2026.
The demonstration proved the viability of blended fuel operations with existing equipment and aligns with CPV's larger decarbonization goals of reducing carbon emissions, operational flexibility, and further diversifying environmentally responsible energy generation.
CPV Demonstrates 5% Hydrogen Fuel Blend in Gas Turbine
The test utilized the facility's GE Vernova 7HA.01 combustion turbine, which operated at base load while burning 5% by volume of a hydrogen-natural gas fuel mix for the one-hour duration of the demonstration.
According to CPV, the success of the test highlights the ability to adapt conventional combined-cycle technologies in the ever-changing power generation space and provides useful data to further incorporate emerging technologies to support decarbonization efforts.
Leadership Perspectives on the Test
"At CPV, we are constantly evaluating technologies and processes to modernize our existing generation portfolio and development pipeline," said Sherman Knight, CEO of CPV.
"The recent demonstration at CPV Towantic took several years of collaboration and planning to support a safe, well-designed test coordinated by our team, industry partners, and the State of Connecticut. We now have key information to better understand the technical and operational considerations involved in potential large-scale applications."
Dave Ross, CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in the Americas, also praised the outcome.
"We're proud to support CPV and our partners in exploring hydrogen as a potential pathway to lower emissions while maintaining the reliability customers depend on," Ross said. "The successful operation of the 7HA.01 gas turbine on a hydrogen-natural gas blend demonstrates how existing power generation technologies can adapt to support evolving energy needs."

Industry Partners and Regulatory Approvals
GE Vernova provided technical support throughout the process and on-site during the test. Certarus served as the hydrogen fuel supplier, while Burns & McDonnell led engineering oversight of both design and studies ahead of the test.
NAES Corporation, the operations and maintenance provider for CPV Towantic, oversaw plant operations during the demonstration and supported implementation of safety protocols.
Ahead of the demonstration, CPV worked closely with Connecticut's Siting Council as well as the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT-DEEP) to receive approval for a modification of the plant's existing air permit allowing for the burning of hydrogen up to 5% by volume.
The approvals came after a rigorous analysis to evaluate the plant's existing design and suitability for the project.

Tracking the North American Power Buildout Before the Contracts Are Gone
The North American power sector is rapidly evolving, with significant investments pouring into renewable energy technologies, energy storage solutions, and grid modernization initiatives. In this dynamic environment, the most impactful projects are frequently those that are developed discreetly and finalized before the broader industry becomes aware of them.
Staying ahead in the power sector means understanding which innovations are transitioning from feasibility studies into procurement, which tenders are imminent, and which competitors have secured their EPC partners. Relying on press releases and outdated news coverage leaves you responding to a market that has already progressed.
The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research provides a comprehensive, real-time overview of power sector projects across North America, from initial announcements to commissioning, enabling your team to seize opportunities while they remain viable.
