Project Overview

Rosmari Marjoram is a pair of deepwater sour gas fields discovered by Shell in 2014 in Block SK318, about 220 km off Bintulu in Sarawak. Sarawak Shell Berhad operates the block with an 80% interest, and Petronas Carigali holds 20%.

The development has three parts: a remotely operated wellhead platform with a subsea tie-back, a pipeline of about 207 km that carries sour wet gas to shore, and an onshore gas plant at Bintulu with 800 MMscf/d of nameplate processing capacity. Treated gas will feed the Petronas LNG Complex at Bintulu.

Shell describes the platform as primarily solar-powered, with 240 solar panels and diesel and battery backup. The onshore plant draws on the Sarawak grid, which is mainly hydroelectric, supported by Renewable Energy Certificates.

The project is the first phase of Sarawak Integrated Sour Gas Evacuation System (SISGES). Petronas says the scheme is designed to unlock more than 10 tcf of high-contaminant gas off Sarawak, and that Rosmari-Marjoram is expected to be a catalyst for developing further sour gas resources.

Rosmari Marjoram Project Location

The Rosmari Marjoram Project is located offshore Sarawak, Malaysia, in Block SK318, approximately 220 km off the coast of Bintulu in the South China Sea.

From the offshore fields, gas is transported through a 207 km sour wet-gas pipeline to the project’s onshore gas plant at Bintulu, Sarawak.

Project Background

Shell drilled Rosmari-1 in April 2014 and found a gas column of more than 450 m, followed by the Marjoram-1 discovery in August 2014. Both are deepwater sour gas discoveries in Block SK318, which Sarawak Shell holds under a 27-year production sharing contract. Perunding Ranhill Worley was awarded the offshore FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) in May 2020.

Samsung Engineering received the onshore EPCC award in July 2022, with limited first-phase works allowed ahead of Final Investment Decision (FID). Sarawak Shell and Petronas Carigali announced FID on 5 September 2022.

Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) received the platform Engineering, Procurement, & Construction (EPC) contract in October 2022, with the unmanned platform to be built with a four-legged jacket for 140 m of water.

Rosmari Marjoram Project Current Status

The Rosmari Marjoram Project is in the construction phase, with first gas expected by the end of 2026.

Conclusion

The Rosmari Marjoram Project is a strategically important deep-water sour-gas development project designed to produce up to 800 MMscf/d of gas, supporting sustained feedgas supply to the Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu.

Its use of a remotely operated unmanned platform and solar-powered offshore facilities reflects a focus on remote operations and lower-carbon development. Once operational, Rosmari Marjoram will strengthen Sarawak’s gas infrastructure and contribute to Malaysia’s LNG production capacity.
