Project Overview

The Ghaziabad–Kanpur Greenfield Expressway is a 380 km four-lane access-controlled expressway under construction by NHAI, under Bharatmala Pariyojna Phase I. It connects Ghaziabad to Kanpur, covering nine districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Upon operation, the expressway will reduce travel time from Ghaziabad to Kanpur to 5.5 hours. Currently, it takes approximately 7-8 hours. Furthermore, it will reduce travel time between Delhi and Kanpur from 7 hours to 6 hours.

The project is classified under the National Green Highways Mission. It is a policy framework that mandates 1 tree planted per metre of corridor on both sides, eco-friendly construction materials, wildlife underpasses, noise barriers near population centres, and AI-powered CCTV cameras for traffic enforcement and safety monitoring.

This makes it one of the first large-scale 'smart green highways' in the Bharatmala programme, designed with environmental and technology features beyond standard national highway specifications.

It is expected to be completed by 2026. The expressway's path through Aligarh, home to Aligarh Muslim University and a major centre for lock manufacturing and hardware exports, makes it simultaneously an education corridor, an industrial freight route, and a rural development highway.

Districts such as Kasganj and Farrukhabad, historically underserved by expressway-quality infrastructure, will for the first time have direct, fast road access to both Delhi NCR and Kanpur.

Project Background

The Ghaziabad–Kanpur corridor was identified as a priority economic corridor under Bharatmala Pariyojna Phase I, approved by the Union Cabinet in October 2017. The rationale was straightforward: Kanpur, India's 11th-largest city and one of the oldest industrial centres in the country, had no direct expressway connection to Delhi or the NCR. Reaching Kanpur from Delhi required navigating NH-19 (old NH-2) through Agra and the congested stretch south to Kanpur, or an indirect route via the Yamuna Expressway.

NHAI prepared the Detailed Project Report and initiated land acquisition proceedings across nine districts. The project was placed under the National Green Highways Mission simultaneously, reflecting the government's commitment to building India's expressway network with environmental co-benefits, including mandatory tree plantation, wildlife crossings, and sustainable construction materials.

The AI surveillance component was added to align the project with NHAI's broader smart highway initiative, under which all new Bharatmala expressways are being fitted with automated traffic monitoring systems.

Land acquisition began across all nine districts at a varying pace. The Ghaziabad–Aligarh section moved fastest, with land control largely secured by 2023–24. The Kannauj district, where farmers disputed compensation rates and alternative land allocation methods, became the corridor's primary acquisition bottleneck.

The economic logic of the expressway is particularly strong in the Doab districts, Kasganj, Farrukhabad, and Kannauj, which are among India's most agriculturally productive zones for mentha (peppermint), potatoes, and sugarcane but have historically been disadvantaged by poor market access.

The expressway's alignment through these districts provides cold chain logistics corridors and agricultural supply chain access that are currently absent, offering farm-gate price improvements and market integration that extend well beyond the immediate construction-period benefits.

Ghaziabad Kanpur Expressway Status

The Ghaziabad Kanpur four-lane Expressway is in the active construction phase, expected to be completed by December 2026. Land acquisition has reached 90% completion, with NHAI having acquired most of the required land.

The project is being developed under the Green Highway Policy at an estimated cost of approximately INR 15,000 crore. The expressway ultimately brings economic growth, eases travel, and reduces congestion on Uttar Pradesh's road network.

Ghaziabad Kanpur Expressway Route

The Ghaziabad Kanpur Expressway connects Ghaziabad, Delhi's eastern gateway and one of the NCR's largest industrial cities, with Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh's largest city by population and the state's most important industrial and manufacturing hub. It passes through nine districts of Uttar Pradesh, reducing travel time to approximately 5.5 hours.

The expressway comprises a 60 km connector spur from Hapur that links the mainline expressway to the Meerut Expressway and National Highway 9 at Ghaziabad, extending the project's effective catchment area to Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and western UP's Doab region without requiring traffic to traverse Ghaziabad city.

Additionally, a planned 25 km link road will connect the Ghaziabad–Kanpur Expressway to the Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport) in the future, making the expressway part of the broader NCR airport access network.
