Project Overview
Coral North is the second floating LNG facility to be installed over the Coral gas field in Area 4 of Mozambique's Rovuma Basin. It will produce gas from the northern part of the Coral reservoir and liquefy it on a purpose-built vessel moored in deep water off Cabo Delgado province, with a stated nameplate liquefaction capacity of 3.6 mtpa.
The Area 4 joint venture took the final investment decision (FID) on 2 October 2025. Eni holds 50% and operates; CNPC holds 20%, and KOGAS, ENH and ADNOC's XRG hold 10% each. Together with Coral South FLNG (operating since 2022), Coral North would take Mozambique's offshore LNG output to roughly 7 mtpa. Eni says this would make Mozambique the third-largest LNG producer and exporter in Africa.
Construction is split between a hull built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea, topsides engineered and procured by a Technip Energies / JGC joint venture, and a separate subsea scope awarded to TechnipFMC.
Coral North FLNG Location
Coral North FLNG is sited in the Rovuma Basin’s Area 4 block, offshore Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique. It is specifically in the northern section of the Coral gas field. The floating LNG unit will be moored in deep water about 50 km off the coast of Palma District, roughly 10 km northeast of the existing Coral South FLNG facility.
Project Background
Eni made its Rovuma Basin discoveries between 2011 and 2014 and reports about 2,400 billion cubic metres of gas in place across them. Coral South FLNG, the first development, started production in 2022 and, according to Eni, has delivered more than 135 LNG cargoes.
Coral North targets the northern segment of the same Area 4 Coral accumulation, allowing additional gas volumes to be brought onstream without a new onshore LNG plant. Coral North is explicitly designed as a “replica” of Coral South to leverage proven technology, reduce execution risk, and accelerate schedule.
The Coral North FLNG is planned to double Mozambique’s operational LNG output when combined with Coral South. Having a nameplate liquefaction capacity of about 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG, it will take the country above 7 mtpa and position it as Africa’s third‑largest LNG producer.
The development supports Mozambique’s broader strategy to monetize offshore gas resources in Area 4 while avoiding some of the security and cost challenges associated with large onshore LNG complexes in Cabo Delgado.
Coral North FLNG Status
As of October 2026, the Coral North FLNG project is in the construction phase. Following the Final Investment Decision in October 2025, Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard in South Korea successfully launched the FLNG hull in January 2026; topside module integration began afterward and is planned to continue through Q1 2027.
In June 2026, the consortium awarded the full EPCIC contract for the floating unit to a JGC–Technip Energies–Samsung Heavy Industries consortium, while MODEC was contracted to supply the SOFEC internal turret mooring system. Eni reports that the project remains on schedule, with completion and startup targeted for 2028.

Coral North FLNG Latest News
The following is the latest news of the project:
June 2026: EPCIC contract awarded to Technip, JGC, Samsung consortium
On 8 June 2026, Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV) awarded the full Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation and Commissioning (EPCIC) contract for Coral North FLNG to a consortium comprising Technip Energies, JGC, and Samsung Heavy Industries.
Technip Energies and JGC will lead engineering and procurement of the topside facilities and overall project management, with Samsung responsible for shipyard construction and integration at Geoje.
January 2026: Coral North FLNG Hull Launched

Eni and its partners CNPC, ENH, KOGAS and XRG announced the launch of the Coral North FLNG vessel’s hull at Geoje, South Korea, on 16 January 2026. Eni said the milestone was achieved in line with the project schedule.
The 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) facility is expected to raise Mozambique’s total LNG Output to about 7 mtpa once operational. Eni said the project is also expected to support local industry, create jobs and expand investment in local development initiatives.
Conclusion
Coral North FLNG is a strategic development project that consolidates Mozambique’s emergence as a major LNG exporter. By replicating the Coral South design and building on its operational experience, the project reduces technical and execution risk while accelerating the timeline from FID to first gas.
It is expected to create roughly 1,400 direct jobs for Mozambicans and generate up to US$3 billion in contracts for local companies in the early years, while also reserving 25% of gas production and all condensate for the domestic market to support industrialisation and energy security.
Upon completion in 2028, Coral North will add about 3.6 mtpa of LNG capacity, lifting Mozambique’s total operational LNG output to around 7 mtpa and positioning the country as Africa’s third‑largest LNG producer.
