China Deploys the World's First Commercial Undersea Data Center

Last Updated on 25th June 2024

China deployed a 1300-tonne submarine data center cabin off the coast of Lingshui, Hainan. The data center is submerged 35 meters underwater and uses the sea to cool and compute. After successful debugging, the first phase of the project will be completed. Furthermore, the data storage unit has a longevity of 25 years. The estimated total project cost of the Hainan undersea data center project is USD 879 million. The project commenced its construction in 2021 and will be completed by 2025.

Each storage unit has an estimated performance comparable to approximately 60,000 regular computers. The upcoming underwater data center covers an area of 68,000 square meters. The undersea data center projects have significant advantages; the project will save around 105,000 tons of freshwater annually. It will also save 122 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

The Hainan Undersea Data Center is a joint collaboration between Beijing Highlander Digital Technology Co., Ltd., the Sanya government, the Hainan Provincial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, Offshore Oil Engineering Company, and Shenzhen HiCloud. Beijing Sinnet, a reputable provider of data center services in China, will run the data center.

This Undersea Data Center Project is an ambitious and innovative project that has the potential to change the way data centers are designed, built, and operated. The project is a major milestone in China's efforts to develop a green and sustainable data center industry.China is also developing water data centers to be deployed along the Yangtze River Delta.

Advantages of an Under-Sea Data Center Facility

Undersea data center projects are a relatively new concept, but they have the potential to revolutionize the way we store and process data. These data centers are located on the seafloor, where they can take advantage of the natural cooling properties of the ocean to reduce energy consumption. They are also protected from natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

Here are some of the potential advantages of undersea data center projects:

  • Reduced energy consumption: The natural cooling properties of the ocean can significantly reduce the energy consumption of data centers. This is because the ocean water is much cooler than the air, and it can be used to cool the servers without the need for air conditioning.

  • Increased protection from natural disasters: Undersea data centers are located on the seafloor, where they are protected from natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

  • Improved latency for coastal populations: Undersea data centers can be located closer to coastal populations, which can improve latency for users in these areas. This is because the data does not have to travel as far to reach the user.
