SK Telecom Launches SK Hyper Subsidiary to Build 15GW AI Data Center Network by 2035 in South Korea

SK Telecom has established a dedicated artificial intelligence data center subsidiary called SK Hyper, committing a total of USD 510.5 billion in investment through 2030 as part of its broader strategy to position South Korea as a global AI infrastructure powerhouse.

A New Entity Focused Exclusively on AI Data Center Development

SK Telecom announced the decision to create SK Hyper following a board meeting held on the 23rd. The new company is structured as a 100% subsidiary of SK Telecom and will be exclusively responsible for securing AI data center sites, building substations, attracting customers, and overseeing commercialization.

 

The formation of SK Hyper represents a direct follow-up to the company's previously announced "Asian AI Infrastructure Hub" strategy, which was unveiled earlier this month.

SK Telecom has also recently established an AIDC Integrated Promotion Team operating under the direct control of its chief executive, with the mandate of managing the AI data center business at the group level.

 

SK Hyper's creation is intended to complement and expand on work already underway at SK Broadband, which will continue to handle ongoing AI data center projects including the Ulsan data center. SK Hyper itself will take responsibility for developing new mid- to long-term gigawatt-class businesses.

 

Investment Timeline and Capital Allocation

Of the total USD 510.5 billion earmarked for the initiative, SK Telecom plans to inject an initial USD 224.6 billion in July of next year. The remaining USD 285.9 billion will be invested sequentially based on the progress of the business. The combined investment figure represents 5.79% of the company's equity capital.

The financial commitment signals the scale of ambition SK Telecom is attaching to the AI data center sector, which has emerged as a critical area of infrastructure development both in South Korea and across the broader Asian technology landscape.

Phased Expansion Targeting 15 Gigawatts of Capacity

SK Hyper's operational roadmap outlines a phased approach to building out AI data center capacity across South Korea. The company plans to establish 5 gigawatts of AI data center capacity by 2029, centered on SK Hyper's development activities. That figure is then targeted to expand to a total of 15 gigawatts by 2035.

The geographic expansion plan begins in Ulsan, from which gigawatt-class AI data centers will then be developed in the Chungcheong and Southwest regions of South Korea.

 

This regional rollout reflects an intention to distribute the infrastructure buildout across multiple areas of the country rather than concentrating capacity in a single location.

SK Hyper's core operational focus will be on securing the public infrastructure necessary for establishing AI data centers at this scale. This includes identifying and locking in suitable business sites, securing the necessary substations, and building out transmission and distribution networks to support the energy demands of large-scale AI computing facilities.

Leadership and Strategic Direction

Jung Seok-geun, who currently serves as head of SK Telecom's AI CIC, has been appointed as the first chief executive of SK Hyper. In addition to leading the new subsidiary, Jung will also serve concurrently as the head of the AIDC Integrated Promotion Team, giving him oversight of the AI data center business across the broader SK Group.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Jung described SK Hyper as a realization of SK Group's blueprint for the Asian AI Infrastructure Hub. He stated that the company would secure core infrastructure and customers through systematic and rapid execution, and contribute to Korea's ambition of becoming one of the world's three major AI powers, a goal referenced by the South Korean government under its AI G3 strategy.

Alignment with National AI Infrastructure Goals

SK Telecom has explicitly framed the establishment of SK Hyper as aligned with the South Korean government's strategy of developing three major AI powerhouses.

 

The move positions SK Telecom as a central private-sector actor in efforts to build the kind of large-scale domestic AI infrastructure that governments and technology companies across the region are racing to establish.

The creation of a standalone subsidiary dedicated entirely to the data center build-out, rather than managing the expansion through existing business units, reflects a structural commitment to treating AI infrastructure as a distinct and priority business category.

 

By separating the gigawatt-class development work from SK Broadband's ongoing data center operations, SK Telecom is creating a dedicated vehicle capable of moving quickly on site acquisition, power infrastructure, and customer development for next-generation AI facilities.
