Lithuania has reached a milestone in its energy transition as the country's first commercial battery storage system has joined the electricity balancing market organized by Litgrid, the Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator. The 1 MW power and 2 MWh capacity energy storage battery system, built by Green Genius in the Alytus district, has submitted its first bids to the market.

The Butrimonys battery park represents the first commercial storage facility in Lithuania to contribute to ensuring the balance between electricity consumption and production in the Lithuanian electricity system. The facility has successfully completed readiness confirmation tests and will provide manual frequency restoration reserve (mFRR) and automatic frequency restoration (aFRR) balancing services.

Technical Operations and Market Participation

The storage facility system operates by charging from the grid when there is excess electricity in the transmission system and discharging when there is a shortage of electricity in the system. Green Genius developed the Butrimonys battery park, while Capalo AI provides the full trading and optimization service on the balancing and wholesale markets. Litgrid currently maintains balancing service agreements with 24 market participants.

Some of these participants are already providing balancing services, while others are carrying out preparatory work. The growing technical capabilities of balancing services allow for the integration of larger amounts of renewable energy resources and a reduction in balancing costs.

Industry Leadership and Future Projects

Capalo AI has passed the prequalification tests for a large photovoltaic asset in Lithuania and received the necessary protocols to provide balancing services in other renewable energy projects. This includes a large solar park developed by UAB Vėjo Galia and UAB TSPI, which will be integrated with an energy storage facility. The hybrid park is supported by Lithuanian controller provider UAB TSPI, which has provided the hybrid park power plant controller to the site and built the needed integration with Capalo AI.

The company is already providing trading services in Latvia, where the first BESS asset is operating on the balancing markets towards Augstsprieguma Tīkls AS (AST). Capalo AI has also signed an agreement to optimize and trade E energija group's 120 MWh Vilnius BESS.

European Market Integration

In recent years, the Baltic transmission system operators Litgrid, Augstsprieguma tīkls, and Elering have joined the common European balancing exchange platforms. In October 2024, they joined the manual frequency restoration reserve services platform, MARI, and in March and April 2025, they joined the automatic frequency restoration reserve services platform, PICASSO.

Participation in the European balancing market has opened up new opportunities for electricity producers and large consumers in the Baltic countries to provide balancing services. Balancing services can be provided using various technologies, including energy storage batteries, solar and wind power plants, and flexible consumption. Participants in the balancing energy market must be able to offer to immediately reduce or increase their production or consumption capacity, allowing electricity transmission system operators to maintain a constant balance between production and consumption.

As Lithuania seeks to generate all its electricity from renewable sources, the demand for balancing services is increasing. Donatas Matelionis, Head of the System Power Operations Department at Litgrid, stated that the company is developing the energy balancing market and encouraging new participants to join. Ruslan Sklepovič, CEO of Green Genius, described becoming the first commercial battery storage project to participate in Lithuania's electricity balancing market as not only a technological milestone but also a clear signal that the country's energy transition is accelerating.

He emphasized that energy storage is the key to stability in a renewables-based electricity system and that the project strengthens Lithuania's energy independence while reducing the use of fossil fuels for grid balancing. Henri Taskinen, CEO of Capalo AI, noted that the first commercial BESS in Lithuania marks an important step for the country's energy transition, with AI-driven optimization ensuring the battery delivers maximum possible value to Lithuania's grid.
