UrbanChain and Blackfinch Strike Two-Way Solar Supply Partnership across Great Britain

UrbanChain has signed a two-way energy partnership with Blackfinch Energy to purchase electricity from two solar farms in Wales while supplying power across Blackfinch's wider portfolio in Great Britain.

The Agreement Covers Roughly 59 GWh of Contracted Renewable Generation

The agreements cover approximately 59GWh of contracted renewable generation from the Llwyndyrus and Bryngolwg solar farms, UrbanChain said. Together, the two solar farms are expected to generate around 15 GWh of renewable electricity annually, approximately 28 times the electricity demand of Blackfinch's 24-site supply portfolio.

Phased Rollout of Generation Agreements

The partnership began in April 2026 when Llwyndyrus Solar Farm joined UrbanChain's private energy market under a two-year agreement. Bryngolwg is scheduled to follow in April 2027 under a five-year agreement.

UrbanChain began supplying electricity across Blackfinch's wider portfolio, covering approximately 545MWh of annual demand. The supply arrangements span 24 half-hourly import meters across Blackfinch's portfolio in England, Scotland, and Wales, covering nine electricity distribution regions.

Welsh Solar Farm near Pwllheli

Llwyndyrus Solar Farm is located near Pwllheli on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd, North Wales. The site has an installed capacity of around 6MW and generates enough electricity to power approximately 1,350 Welsh homes annually.

Market Structure Built on P442 Rule Change

For the project, UrbanChain used its position as a licensed energy supplier to establish a structure that captures the benefits of P442, an electricity market rule change allowing qualifying license-exempt supply to be identified separately through the industry settlement system.

The arrangement includes payment guarantees, compliance commitments, and safeguards against future regulatory changes, providing Blackfinch with a legally verified route to secure additional value from the electricity generated.

Executives Welcome Expanded Relationship

UrbanChain senior PPA originator Tyler Gingell said, "In six months, our relationship with Blackfinch has grown from a single generation agreement into a broad partnership spanning renewable generation and energy supply across Great Britain. We now purchase power from Blackfinch's solar assets while supplying electricity across its wider portfolio. That is a strong example of the more connected energy market we are building, in which renewable generation and commercial demand can be brought together more efficiently."

Blackfinch Energy senior commercial portfolio manager Sam Dickerson said: "Working with UrbanChain reflects our commitment to finding innovative, practical solutions that support the long-term performance of our assets and contribute to the continued growth of renewable energy across the UK."
