Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a contract to provide the Safety and Automation System for Equinor's Wisting Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, a key milestone in the development of one of the largest undeveloped oil discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
The announcement was made public by Kongsberg Maritime on 6 November 2026.
Wisting field in Barents Sea
The Wisting field is located in the Barents Sea, approximately 300 km north of the Norwegian mainland.
The development is expected to generate significant value creation and industrial activity in Norway over an anticipated operational life of around 30 years.
Initial phase focused on front-end engineering and design
As part of the initial phase of the project, Kongsberg Maritime will support front-end engineering and design (FEED) activities related to the Safety and Automation System scope.
During this phase, the company will work closely with Equinor and other project suppliers to develop and mature solutions that support a safe, efficient, and sanctionable development concept for the FPSO.
The company's early involvement in the project has enabled the contribution of expertise drawn from major offshore developments globally, which, according to the company, helps support the delivery of a robust and competitive project concept.
Drawing on decades of experience from complex offshore energy projects worldwide, Kongsberg Maritime will leverage digital technologies, advanced engineering tools, and new collaborative ways of working to help optimise project execution and lifecycle performance.

Scope extends to process control, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
Should the project proceed into the execution phase, Kongsberg Maritime's scope will include technology, services, and solutions spanning process control, safety systems, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity. Together, these capabilities will help safeguard the integrity, performance, and operational resilience of the FPSO throughout its lifecycle.
The shared ambition across the project team is to establish a new benchmark for offshore greenfield developments through enhanced digitalisation, operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
Leadership highlights long-standing partnership with Equinor
Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, President and CEO of Kongsberg Maritime, said the Wisting development represents an important addition to the company's growing portfolio of advanced offshore energy projects.
"Equinor has been a valued customer and technology partner for many years, consistently challenging the industry to deliver safer, smarter, and more sustainable solutions," Haugan said.
She added: "We are proud to contribute to Europe's energy security. By combining our expertise in automation, safety, digitalisation, and cybersecurity, we look forward to helping deliver a highly efficient and future-focused FPSO that supports long-term value creation and stability."
