Greenvolt Power, the utility-scale renewable energy business of Greenvolt Group, has brought its first two battery energy storage systems (BESS) into operation in Japan, marking a milestone in the company's expansion in Asia and adding to a rapidly growing global storage portfolio.

Two stand-alone projects in Kyushu

The two stand-alone projects are located in Kyushu, in south-western Japan. They have a combined power capacity of 4 MW and an energy storage capacity of 8 MWh.

The systems operate on a merchant basis, meaning they generate revenues through participation in electricity markets rather than through contracted offtake arrangements. According to the company, the projects also contribute to grid flexibility and resilience.

The Japanese commissioning represents a further step in strengthening Greenvolt Group's presence in Asia, where the company reports it is active in Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia.

Executive commentary

João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group, said bringing the first battery storage projects into operation in Japan was an important step in strengthening the company's presence in Asia and further consolidating its global footprint across three continents.

He noted that the group has one of the largest BESS pipelines in Europe, with around 1 GW of projects under construction or in operation, and that it continues to expand its presence in the sector across its markets.

Spiros Martinis, CEO of Greenvolt International Power, said Japan is another market where Greenvolt Power has successfully brought battery storage projects into operation.

He said the company continues to pursue opportunities across the Asian markets where it is present, including Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia, as growing electricity needs create opportunities to leverage the expertise it has built across different markets and business environments.

A growing global BESS portfolio

The Japanese projects add to a series of recent milestones in Greenvolt Power's battery storage business.

In Poland, the group completed the Ełk and Turośń Kościelna projects, with a combined capacity of 400 MW / 1.6 GWh, and started construction of the Siedlce project, which, at 600 MW / 2.4 GWh, is described as one of the largest BESS projects in Europe. In Hungary, Greenvolt brought the Buj facility, with 99.8 MW / 288.6 MWh of capacity, into operation.

Across its markets, Greenvolt now has a BESS pipeline of approximately 4.6 GW spanning Europe, North America, and Asia. More than 1 GW of projects are under construction or in operation, and over 800 MW have been sold to date as part of the company's asset rotation strategy.

Storage beyond utility scale

Beyond its utility-scale developments, Greenvolt says battery storage is becoming an increasingly relevant component of its on-site distributed generation solutions for businesses across several European markets. In that segment, storage complements solar generation and helps companies manage their energy consumption more flexibly.

With the Kyushu systems now operational, Greenvolt's global BESS footprint extends across three continents, and the company signals continued pursuit of storage opportunities in its Asian markets as electricity demand grows.
