Independent power producer BNZ has begun construction of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at its Rinaldone and Camposcala projects in the Lazio region of Italy, adding a combined capacity of more than 216 MWh to the solar photovoltaic plants the company already operates there.
Hybridising Existing Solar Assets
The two battery systems represent the technological hybridisation of BNZ's existing photovoltaic infrastructure in the region: the Rinaldone plant, with a capacity of 45 MWp, and the Camposcala plant, with 53 MWp.
Each of the new battery installations features a power capacity of 27 MW, corresponding to 108 MWh of energy storage, with a duration of four hours. According to the company, this configuration allows energy to be stored during peaks in solar production and fed into the grid during periods of highest demand.
Construction of the Rinaldone project is being carried out by Grupotec, while works at Camposcala are being delivered by Elecnor. BNZ's stated objective is to commission both facilities before the end of the year.
Luis Selva, CEO of BNZ, described the start of construction as a decisive step in the company's consolidation as a fully-fledged energy operator in Italy. "Hybridising our assets with BESS technology is a cornerstone of our multi-technology strategy, as it allows us not only to maximize the efficiency of the clean energy we generate, but also to provide the firmness and flexibility that the electricity grid needs," Selva said.
"With these projects, we reaffirm our commitment to the energy transition, security of supply, and the delivery of tangible value to local communities."

Grid Resilience and Emissions Savings
BNZ says the deployment of the batteries will deliver a substantial boost to the flexibility and resilience of the local power grid, serving as a backup system that balances electricity supply and demand in real time.
The company states this will drive more efficient integration of renewables, minimise curtailment of clean energy, and strengthen the overall stability of the power system.
From an environmental perspective, the projects are intended to optimise solar generation and reduce emissions from more carbon-intensive technologies. Each facility is estimated to prevent between 10,000 and 15,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
In line with BNZ's environmental conservation and biodiversity policies, the company has also opted for natural vegetation control across the plants, recently introducing a flock of 350 sheep and three sheepdogs to manage the grounds.

Local Hiring and Community Engagement
The development and construction phases have prioritised hiring local contractors and resources, which BNZ says directly fosters economic activity and job creation in the region.
As part of its community commitment, the company actively collaborates with local initiatives including La Fiera Maremma d'Amare in Montalto di Castro and Viterbo Clean Up, among others.
A Milestone in BNZ's Italian Roll-Out
The construction milestone forms part of BNZ's broader operational roll-out in Italy, where the company plans to install 350 MW of storage capacity distributed across a portfolio of eight strategic projects focused on high-irradiance areas.
Across Europe, BNZ holds an overall portfolio exceeding 2.7 GW, of which 850 MW correspond to battery storage technology.
By positioning itself as what it terms a Next-Generation IPP, BNZ says it goes beyond the traditional generation model, embedding asset hybridisation, digitalisation, and infrastructure optimisation into its core strategy to maximise system efficiency and address the challenges of the energy transition.
The announcement, dated 5 November 2026, marks the latest in a series of recent developments for the company in the region. In July 2026, BNZ announced a partnership with Sungrow to deploy 240 MWh of battery storage across its Viterbo projects in Italy, and in September 2026 it confirmed full-capacity operation of its Gemunde photovoltaic plant in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal.
