The Bundesnetzagentur, Germany's Federal Network Agency, published the results of its latest onshore wind energy and innovation auctions on June 25, 2026, revealing a heavily oversubscribed tender for onshore wind and a continued downward trend in awarded prices that has now extended across seven consecutive bidding rounds.
Onshore Wind Auction Draws Record Oversubscription
The May 1, 2026 onshore wind auction offered a tendered volume of 2,495 megawatts. Bidders submitted 628 offers totalling 6,409 megawatts, meaning the volume of bids exceeded the available capacity by more than 2.5 times.
The Bundesnetzagentur awarded contracts to 270 of those bids, covering a combined capacity of 2,499 megawatts. Thirteen bids were excluded from the process on procedural grounds.
Klaus Müller, president of the Bundesnetzagentur, described the result as a continuation of a clear competitive trend. "The auction for onshore wind turbines was again significantly oversubscribed. This is reflected in further falling award values," Müller said.
The degree of oversubscription in this round reinforces what the agency has observed as a pattern of robust competition among project developers seeking support under Germany's renewable energy tendering framework.
Award Prices Continue Seven-Round Decline
Prices determined through the pay-as-bid procedure ranged between 4.44 ct/kWh and 5.19 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award value fell to 5.06 ct/kWh, down from 5.54 ct/kWh in the previous round.
The Bundesnetzagentur noted that since the auction held in August 2024, the average award value has fallen continuously across seven bidding rounds, declining by more than 2 ct/kWh in total over that period.
The drop of 0.48 ct/kWh between the most recent two rounds alone represents a significant single-round decrease and extends what has become a sustained compression of support prices in Germany's onshore wind sector. The agency attributed the declining values directly to the persistent and substantial oversubscription seen in successive rounds.

Niedersachsen, Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia Lead Regional Awards
Among the regions receiving awarded capacity, Niedersachsen recorded the largest volume in this round, with 628 megawatts across 70 successful bids. Brandenburg followed with 468 megawatts from 47 bids, and North Rhine-Westphalia received awards totalling 353 megawatts from 31 bids.
The concentration of awarded capacity in these three states reflects the continuing role of northern and northwestern Germany, along with the northeastern state of Brandenburg, as primary locations for onshore wind development under the support scheme.
Innovation Auction Fully Subscribed with Stable Prices
The concurrent innovation auction, which ran to a tendered volume of 475 megawatts, also attracted bids significantly exceeding the available capacity. A total of 46 bids were submitted with a combined volume of 749 megawatts.
The Bundesnetzagentur awarded contracts to 27 bids totalling 482 megawatts, while two bids were excluded from the procedure. The awarded volume slightly exceeded the tendered amount, as is typical when the agency fills capacity to the nearest eligible bid.
Müller noted that the innovation auction similarly saw bid volumes substantially exceed the tendered capacity, while award values remained steady. "In the innovation auction too, the bid volume significantly exceeded the tendered volume. The award values remained stable," he said.
All 27 successful bids in the innovation auction related to combinations of solar installations and storage systems. No other technology combinations featured among the awarded projects in this round.
Innovation Award Values Hold Steady Around 5.34 ct/kWh
Award values in the innovation auction ranged from 4.75 ct/kWh to 5.61 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award value came to 5.34 ct/kWh, which the Bundesnetzagentur described as being on a par with the previous round's result of 5.31 ct/kWh.
The near-identical figure between rounds contrasts with the pronounced downward movement seen in the onshore wind auction over the same period, suggesting that the solar-plus-storage segment is finding a price equilibrium at current support levels.
Bavaria Dominates Innovation Auction Regional Breakdown
Bavaria received by far the largest share of awarded innovation capacity, with 287 megawatts across 15 successful bids. The next largest volumes went to Schleswig-Holstein with 53 megawatts from two bids, and Brandenburg with 51 megawatts also from two bids. Bavaria's dominant position in the innovation auction reflects the state's established role as a major location for large-scale solar development in Germany.
Next Auction Rounds Scheduled for August and September 2026
The Bundesnetzagentur confirmed that the next onshore wind auction round is scheduled for August 1, 2026. The next innovation auction will be held on September 1, 2026.
