ScottishPower has commenced work on the UK's largest offshore windfarm, East Anglia THREE, with the installation of a record-breaking monopile foundation in the North Sea. The project, valued at EUR 4 billion, marks the start of the company's biggest renewable energy project to date, aiming to generate 1.4 gigawatts of power to supply over 1.3 million UK homes. The installation of the first monopile, measuring almost 84 metres in height and weighing 1,800t, sets a new record as the largest monopile installed from a jack-up vessel in Europe.
Project Overview
The East Anglia Three windfarm will be built in the North Sea, covering an area roughly the size of 43,000 football pitches, and will feature 95 Siemens Gamesa turbines each rated at 14.7MW. The project is expected to contribute substantially to the UK's renewable energy goals, aligning with national efforts to phase out fossil fuels and expand clean energy infrastructure. The construction of all 95 wind turbines is scheduled to finish by early 2026, with the Seaway Ventus jack-up installation vessel, operated by Seaway7, installing the monopiles and transition pieces. The monopile foundations, ranging from 67m to 85m in length and between 1,200t and 1,800t in weight, will support the turbines across the vast area. The Joint Venture Navantia Seanergies Windar Renovables (JVNW) is manufacturing 45 monopiles, while the remaining 50 will be made by the company Haizea. The installation of these massive structures presents considerable logistical and technical challenges, including precise offshore placement and handling in challenging marine environments.

The installation of the first monopile is a significant engineering achievement, demonstrating the capability to handle extremely heavy structures in complex marine environments. The Seaway Ventus vessel was equipped with a custom-built mission equipment spread, completed over a two-year period, to accommodate the project's specific requirements. The first transition piece, weighing over 400t and measuring 20m tall, has already been installed, marking a major milestone in the project's construction.
