JSW Energy Begins Construction of a Massive Battery Storage Project in India

JSW Energy, one of India's largest renewable energy companies, has started construction activities for its Battery Energy Storage System Project (BESS), thus marking its entry into the Indian battery storage market. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) awarded the 1 GWh battery storage project. Furthermore, the project is expected to be completed by June 2025.

 

 

The project consists of two installations, each with a 500 MWh storage capacity. It is designed for two hours of storage in one cycle. The project will be developed under a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) mechanism and transferred to the off-taker after 12 years.

Besides battery storage, the company is developing commercial-scale green hydrogen projects in India and green steel. The company had signed a seven-year green hydrogen supply agreement with JSW Steel Ltd. for 3,800 tons per year. The company recently received a 700 MW solar power project in India.

 

Sharad Mahendra, the joint managing director and CEO of JSW Energy, said, "Our Battery Energy Storage System project represents a crucial advancement in enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources, further solidifying our leadership in innovative energy solutions."

JSW Energy Ltd. is one of the largest renewable energy companies in India. JSW Energy has a total generation capacity of 13.3 GW, comprising 7.3 GW of operational, 2.6 GW of under-construction renewable power projects in India, and a pipeline of 3.4 GW. Recently, the company unveiled its plans to develop 1500 MW of pumped storage in Telangana.

 

In addition, the company has 3.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity through a battery energy storage system and hydro-pumped storage project. The company aims to reach 20 GW of generation and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity before 2030.
