About this report

In 2025, India's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market witnessed significant growth, with 547 MWh of new battery storage capacity added during the year, representing a 26% year-on-year increase compared with 2024. This brought India's cumulative installed BESS capacity to 1,082 MWh by the end of 2025, reflecting the rapid deployment of energy storage systems as the country continues to integrate increasing amounts of variable renewable energy into its power system.

This growth is being driven by the rapid expansion of solar and wind power capacity, rising demand for grid flexibility, and the need to enhance the reliability and stability of the electricity system.

Market Overview

India's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market is emerging as a key component of the country's energy transition supported by the increasing deployment of renewable energy and the need for greater grid flexibility. As India moves toward its 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070, BESS is expected to play an increasingly important role in managing renewable energy variability, meeting peak demand, and maintaining grid stability.

The market is increasingly shifting toward utility-scale and standalone BESS projects, with standalone ESS (Energy Storage System) accounting for over 71% of total energy storage capacity tendered in 2025. While 2-hour systems have historically dominated the market, the adoption of 4-hour storage systems is increasing to support longer-duration peak demand and renewable energy integration.

Looking ahead, India's BESS requirement is projected to reach 34.72 GWh by 2026-27 and 236.22 GWh by 2031-32. Growing renewable capacity, rising electricity demand, declining battery costs, and supportive government policies are expected to drive market growth, although challenges related to project viability, aggressive bidding, and import dependence may affect deployment.

Drivers

Supportive Government Policies and Financial Incentives

Supportive government policies and financial incentives are playing a crucial role in accelerating the deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in India. Through measures such as the Energy Storage Obligation (ESO), Viability Gap Funding (VGF), and incentives for domestic battery manufacturing, the government is helping improve project viability, reduce upfront investment barriers, and create a more favorable environment for large-scale energy storage deployment.

The Energy Storage Obligation (ESO) was introduced to create assured demand for energy storage systems by requiring electricity distribution companies and other obligated entities to meet a specified portion of their electricity consumption through renewable energy integrated with storage. The obligation started at 1% in FY 2023-24 and is scheduled to increase gradually to 4% by FY 2029-30. To qualify under the framework, at least 85% of the energy stored must be sourced from renewable energy.

The growing implementation of this framework can also be seen at the state level. For instance, Maharashtra's Renewable Energy Policy 2026 introduces a more ambitious state-level ESO, requiring distribution companies to meet an obligation of at least 10%, with at least 85% of the stored energy sourced from renewable energy. Such initiatives are expected to create additional demand for energy storage and accelerate the deployment of BESS projects.

In addition to regulatory mandates, the government is providing financial support to address the high upfront costs associated with BESS deployment. The Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme aims to improve the economic viability of storage projects by reducing project costs and making large-scale deployment more financially attractive.

The government initially approved a VGF scheme in 2023 to support 4,000 MWh of BESS capacity. Building on this initiative, a second VGF scheme was approved in 2025, providing INR 5,400 crore in financial support for an additional 30 GWh of BESS capacity, further strengthening India's large-scale energy storage pipeline and demonstrating the government's growing commitment to the sector.

Restraints

Intense competition in BESS tenders has led to aggressive tariff bidding, raising concerns about the financial viability of projects. The low tariffs discovered for standalone BESS projects may not adequately cover actual project costs, potentially placing pressure on developer margins and affecting the long-term profitability and sustainability of projects.

For instance, aggressive bidding during 2025 resulted in the lowest discovered tariff for 2-hour standalone BESS systems falling to INR 1.48 lakh/MW/month, significantly below the estimated viability benchmark of around INR 2.3 lakh/MW/month. This gap has raised concerns over project profitability, with nearly 75% of the allocated 2-hour BESS capacity falling into a financially risky category.

Another major challenge is India's heavy dependence on imports for battery cells, critical minerals, and other essential components required for BESS deployment. The limited domestic availability of key minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, exposes the industry to global price fluctuations, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical risks, which can increase project costs and affect timely deployment.

For example, in 2025, India imported around 18,200 tonnes of lithium compounds, worth USD 1.2 billion, with 68% of imports originating from China and a further 24% from Chile. This significant reliance on overseas suppliers highlights the vulnerability of India's battery storage industry to external supply disruptions and price volatility.

Market Opportunity

India's transition toward a renewable-based power system is creating significant growth opportunities for the battery energy storage system (BESS) market. The increasing penetration of solar and wind energy, rising electricity demand, supportive government policies, and the growing need for grid flexibility are expected to drive substantial investments in energy storage in the coming years.

As the market develops, India is gradually moving beyond conventional 2-hour BESS systems toward 4-hour and longer-duration storage solutions. This shift is creating opportunities for battery manufacturers, project developers, and technology providers to meet the growing need for extended energy shifting, particularly during evening and night-time peak demand periods. Longer-duration and grid-forming batteries are also expected to gain importance as renewable energy penetration increases.

Another emerging opportunity lies in the ability of BESS to generate revenue through multiple applications, including energy arbitrage, frequency regulation, ancillary services, peak shifting, and grid balancing. India's evolving regulatory framework is enabling storage-based resources to participate in ancillary services, creating opportunities for storage-as-a-service and multi-revenue business models.

For instance, GRID-INDIA conducted an Automatic Generation Control (AGC) pilot using a 20 MW/40 MWh BESS at BRPL Kilokari in 2025 to assess the role of battery storage in secondary frequency control and grid balancing. Such initiatives demonstrate the potential for BESS projects to generate additional revenue from grid services alongside conventional applications such as energy arbitrage and peak shifting.

Segment analysis

The India Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market is segmented based on battery type and connection type. By battery type, the market includes lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, lead-acid batteries, while by connection type, it is divided into on-grid and off-grid systems.

By Battery Type

1. Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are currently the dominant technology in the BESS market due to their high energy density, high round-trip efficiency, long cycle life, and declining costs. They are widely used in utility-scale energy storage, renewable energy integration, commercial applications, and peak shaving.

2. Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries are an emerging alternative to lithium-ion technology, offering the potential to reduce dependence on lithium and other critical minerals. The technology is being evaluated for applications including renewable energy storage and data centers, highlighting the growing commercial interest in sodium-ion batteries in India.

3. Flow Batteries

Flow batteries, particularly Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs), store energy in liquid electrolytes held in external tanks. This allows power and energy capacity to be scaled independently, making them suitable for long-duration energy storage applications. A recent example is NTPC's 600 kW/3 MWh VRFB project at its NETRA facility in Greater Noida, inaugurated in November 2025, marking India's first MWh-scale flow battery deployment.

4. Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are a mature and widely available storage technology, primarily used for backup power, telecom infrastructure, UPS systems, and off-grid applications. However, their lower energy density, shorter cycle life, and lower efficiency compared with lithium-ion batteries limit their adoption in large-scale grid-connected BESS projects. Unlike flow and sodium-ion technologies, recent large-scale lead-acid BESS pilot projects in India are limited.

By Connection Type

1. On-Grid BESS

On-grid BESS is connected to the transmission or distribution network and is primarily used for renewable energy integration, peak demand management, grid balancing, and ancillary services.
