Swiss energy company Axpo has officially inaugurated its first wind farm in Finland, marking what the company describes as the beginning of a wider push into the Finnish renewable energy market.
The Lålax wind farm, located in the municipality of Vörå in the Ostrobothnia region of western Finland, was opened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Finland's Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering, Joakim Strand, alongside representatives from local government and the surrounding community.
Four Vestas Turbines Commissioned After Eleven Months of Construction
The Lålax facility was technically commissioned in September 2025 following eleven months of construction. It comprises four Vestas wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 6.2 MW and a hub height of 134 metres, bringing the total installed capacity of the wind farm to 24.8 MW.
The electricity generated by the facility is fed into the transmission grid through a dedicated substation and is marketed on the power exchange by Axpo Nordic.
Axpo projects the wind farm will produce approximately 70 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, a figure the company says could theoretically supply around 5,400 Finnish single-family homes with clean electricity each year.
Project Aligns with Finland's 2035 Climate Neutrality Target
Finland has committed by law to achieving climate neutrality by 2035, a target the company described as one of the most ambitious in the world. Axpo positioned the Lålax project as a direct contribution to both the local energy supply and the achievement of those national climate goals.
The company also said the project reinforces the Ostrobothnia region's standing as a suitable location for renewable energy development.
The inauguration represents the first onshore wind farm Axpo has built in Finland, and company representatives were explicit that it is intended as a springboard for further development in the country.

Axpo Cites Growing Finnish Project Pipeline
Klaus Heckenberger, Head of Axpo's Wind Division and CEO of Volkswind, said at the event that the Lålax project is the starting point for what the company has planned in Finland. "We have built up an attractive project pipeline in the country over the past few years and are looking forward to developing further projects in future," he said.
Joakim Ingves, Managing Director of Axpo Renewable Finland, credited the local team based in Vaasa for the delivery of the project. "This project is the result of the outstanding work by our local team in Vaasa. And we also want to thank all the other teams and partners who contributed to making this project possible," he said.
Jan Finne, Chief Executive of Vörå municipality, welcomed the investment and characterised it as a meaningful development for the local area. "The investment represents an important step in the development of our municipality and, together with Axpo, contributes to a sustainable and secure energy supply for the future," Finne said.
Volkswind Expertise Transferred from Germany and France
The project draws on the experience of Volkswind, an Axpo subsidiary that has been part of the group since 2015. The Axpo and Volkswind team has constructed more than 100 wind farms across Germany and France, with a combined installed capacity of over 1,600 MW. Axpo said that accumulated expertise is now being applied to its operations in the Finnish market.
Community Open Day Held Alongside Formal Inauguration
In addition to the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, Axpo opened the wind farm to residents from the surrounding area during the afternoon of the inauguration.
Visitors were offered guided tours of the wind turbines and given the opportunity to learn about the technology, operation, and significance of the project. A family programme with activities for children and catering was also provided.
Axpo described the community open day as part of its broader commitment to openness and transparency in the development of renewable energy projects, and said such engagement is intended to actively foster interaction and dialogue with local communities.
Axpo Expands Renewable Footprint Across Europe
The Lålax inauguration comes during a period of active expansion for Axpo across multiple European markets. In the same week, the company announced the launch of power balancing services in Hungary and confirmed it had fed solar energy into the German grid for the first time. The Finnish wind farm opening adds a new country to the list of markets in which Axpo now operates renewable generation assets.
