A data center operator atNorth has signed an agreement with Swedish heat recovery firm Calentix to deploy heat reuse technology at its up to 300 MW SWE04 data center in Solleftea, Sweden.

Deal Targets First Heat Delivery in 2029

The two companies signed a project development agreement under which Calentix will lead the development of a potential heat recovery solution designed to feed the nearby Langsele district heating network, which is operated by Swedish utility Adven.

The companies have set a target for the first delivery of heat in Q2 of 2029. In the first phase of the project, heat recovery is expected to total 1.6MW, with the potential to expand to approximately 20MW. Linking the data center with the district heating network will require between 2km (1.2 miles) and 10km (6.2 miles) of new pipelines.

Division of Responsibilities Between the Partners

Under the terms of the agreement, atNorth will provide access to the surplus heat generated at SWE04, together with site integration and the necessary infrastructure interfaces. Calentix will lead the project's development and financing, while atNorth will make the surplus heat available for dispatch to the local heating network.

The companies said that this structure will allow "each partner to focus on what they do best, while creating a practical way for the heat to be used within the local energy system and demonstrating how collaboration between specialist partners can make a difference."

According to the partners, the core challenge of the project will be finding a solution that creates value for both sides.

Feasibility Study Completed, Viability Work Underway

The companies have already completed an early feasibility study exploring the project's potential. That study confirmed that heat recovery is technically feasible and that there is local interest in exploring the opportunity further.

Following the studies, the partners said the focus is now on determining whether the project can become technically and commercially viable. This work includes technical design, site planning, commercial principles, and the agreements needed between the different parties.

The companies are targeting the signing of a heat purchase agreement in 2027. Following that step, the partners said they will make a final investment decision on the project.

SWE04: A New Large-Scale Site in Långsele

atNorth announced plans for its SWE04 data center in February. The site is located at Hamre Industrial Park in Långsele and will be developed on a 50-hectare plot. The facility will support direct liquid cooling, and the company said the site will be able to support densities of up to 1MW per rack.

atNorth's Growing Swedish Footprint

The company currently operates one facility in Sweden. SWE01, located in Kista, a suburb of Stockholm, was launched in 2022 and offers 12MW of capacity across 6,400 sqm (68,890 sq ft). That site is home to Swedish cloud provider 6G AI Sweden and AlphaTon Capital Corp.

A second facility in Stockholm, known as SWE02, is in development. Announced last month and set to be located close to SWE01, the new facility will offer 30MW and is due to go live in Q4 2027.

Heat Reuse: A Recurring Strategy for atNorth

The agreement with Calentix is the latest in a series of heat reuse deals signed by atNorth in recent years. Most recently, in August, the company partnered with sustainable infrastructure firm Selected Group on a heat reuse project at its DEN02 data center campus in Ølgod, Denmark.

The Calentix deal at SWE04 extends that approach to northern Sweden, where the surplus heat from the Sollefteå facility could eventually supply as much as 20MW to the Långsele district heating network operated by Adven, should the project pass its upcoming commercial and technical viability milestones and reach a final investment decision.

Your Shortcut to Sweden's Booming Data Center Market

Sweden's data center pipeline is expanding at a pace few sectors can match, with new campuses announced from Dublin to Frankfurt almost every month. The real question isn't whether opportunity exists; it's whether you'll see it before your competitors do.

Tracking hyperscale and colocation developments across dozens of Swedish markets manually is a losing game. The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research consolidates every stage of the data center project lifecycle into one intelligence dashboard, so your business development team spends less time searching and more time winning.

From early-stage site announcements to completed facilities, you get verified, updated intelligence on projects that matter to your growth strategy in Sweden.
