The Great Nicobar Island (GNI) project is an infrastructure project built at the Southern end of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Project Background
The Great Nicobar Island Project is an infrastructure project aimed at establishing a port, airport, power facilities, and a township on Great Nicobar Island. The Great Nicobar Island is famous for its pristine rainforest, diverse biodiversity, and indigenous communities, including the Shompen and Nicobarese tribes.
Developed by NITI Aayog, with a pre-feasibility report prepared by AECOM India, the initiative aims to transform the island into a logistics and trade hub, reducing dependence on foreign transshipment ports like those in Singapore and Colombo.
On 18th January, 2021, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) approved the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around the Galathea National Park (GNP), which is a home for rare species of plants & animals. The ESZ provides a neutral territory in a safeguarded area, protecting Faunal & Floral diversity. The selection of such a small ESZ around the park means that the project faces no barriers in the future.
The project was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021. It received the environmental and forest clearance in 2022 from the Ministry of Environment, following conditions for the conservation of biodiversity and tribal welfare. This is amid ongoing debates on sustainability and indigenous rights.
Great Nicobar Island Project Completion
Developed by NITI Aayog and carried out by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation Limited (ANIIDCO) over three phases spanning 30 years. Phase 1 completion is expected by 2028, which will comprise the International Container Trans shipment and an International Airport.
The overall completion of the project is expected by 2050, which will include an expanded port, dual coastal townships, deep-sea mining, industrial hubs, and tourism resorts.

The total estimated cost for the Great Nicobar Island Project is INR 81,000 crore (USD 9.7 billion). It includes the cost of constructing all components: the deep-sea transshipment port at Galathea Bay, an international airport, a residential and commercial township, and a 450 MVA gas and solar-based power plant. Components of the Great Nicobar Island
The Great Nicobar Island Project focuses on the four main components of the project. Below follows a detailed description of all four:
International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT): An International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) is a deep-water port built at Galathea Bay. It is designed to handle up to 16 million TEUs per year, with 4 million TEUs planned in Phase 1. The aim is to compete with Singapore's transhipment throughput along the China-influenced Malacca Strait, which carries approximately 25% of all global trade.
An International Greenfield Airport: An airport designed to serve as a dual-use facility, handling both civilian and defense needs. It is a 3,300-meter-long runway, handling a wide-body aircraft. It aims to have a passenger capacity of around 4,000 per hour by 2050.
Township Development: It involves building two new greenfield coastal cities, supporting large-scale urbanization, commercial expansion, and population growth on the island. One is built on the southeast side of the Island & the other one is on the southwest side. Together, they will cover 16,610 hectares (166 sq km), designed to accommodate up to 65,000 initial residents.
Gas and Solar Power Plant: It is located on a 39-hectare site, mostly within protected forest land, near Galathea Bay. A 450 MVA Hybrid Gas-Solar Plant is to be built, ensuring self-sufficiency. It guarantees a stable and sustainable energy source for port operations, airports, townships, and related development.

Great Nicobar Project Current Status
