Project Overview

The Bangalore Chennai Expressway is a four-lane (expandable to eight-lane) under-construction expressway developed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is a 262 km-long expressway that starts in Hoskote, Karnataka, and ends at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Upon its operation (expected by July 2026), the expressway will connect Bangalore and Chennai (the Capitals of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) in just three hours. Currently, it takes nearly 5-6 hours to cover the distance.

It is built in three phases, and its first phase consists of 15 major bridges, 47 minor bridges, 4 grade separators, 63 underpasses, 4 toll plazas, and 1 truck lay-by. The expressway also promotes the Chennai Bangalore Industrial Corridor, which aims to boost the area’s manufacturing sector.

Project Background

The Bangalore Chennai Expressway is also known as National Expressway 7 (NE-7). NHAI is developing it under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Programme. It is made under the Hybrid Annuity Model.

The project was proposed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in 2011, with the aim of economic and social growth. The progress was stopped due to the land acquisition and financing challenges.

The project was then finalized under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Programme in 2015. The land acquisition process started in December 2018 for 2,650 hectares of land. It was completed in January 2021, when it was designated a National Expressway. The bidding process began in November 2020, and the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022.

Bangalore Chennai Expressway Completion Date

The Bangalore Chennai Expressway is an under-construction project expected to open in July 2026. Initially, the expressway was expected to be operational by August 2025, but this was later extended to December 2025.

Project Cost

The total estimated cost for the construction of the Bangalore Chennai Expressway is approximately INR 18,000 crore (USD 2.13 billion). Out of this, approximately INR 5,700 crore (USD 672 million) will be used for construction. The remaining will be used for land acquisition, toll-gate mechanism, project administration, etc.
