Turkey’s First FPSO Vessel Arrives in Black Sea to Boost Domestic Gas Output

Updated on Jun 04, 2025, 04:00 AM IST

Turkey’s first floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel, Osman Gazi, has arrived in the Black Sea, marking a key development in the country’s strategy to enhance domestic energy production and reduce reliance on imported gas.

The FPSO will operate at the Sakarya gas field, Turkey’s largest natural gas reserve, under a 20-year production contract starting in 2026. Once in full operation, it is expected to double daily output from 9 million to 20 million cubic meters (mcm), helping meet the energy needs of around 8 million households.

The Osman Gazi, acquired in 2023 from BW Offshore by Turkey’s state energy company TPAO, measures 298.5 meters in length and 56 meters in width, with a crew capacity of 140. It can process up to 10.5 mcm of gas per day and transfer up to 10 mcm. Processed gas will be sent to shore via a 161-kilometer pipeline and integrated into the national grid.

Strengthening Energy Security

The FPSO’s deployment supports Turkey’s broader effort to develop domestic resources amid ongoing efforts to cut energy imports, which currently account for more than 90% of the country’s energy consumption. It joins other energy assets including drillships Fatih, Yavuz, Kanuni, and Abdülhamid Han in reinforcing Turkey’s offshore exploration and production capacity.

The vessel, floated out on May 27 following technical upgrades in Çanakkale, docked at the Port of Filyos over the weekend. Its commissioning is seen as a pivotal step in Turkey’s long-term plan to strengthen energy independence and supply resilience.
