Saipem Secures $3.1 Billion Qatar Offshore Contract for North Field Compression Project
Italian engineering company Saipem, in partnership with Offshore Oil Engineering Co. Ltd. (COOEC), has been awarded a major offshore EPCI contract by QatarEnergy LNG, valued at approximately USD 3.1 billion. The agreement, announced on December 21, 2025, is part of the COMP5 package for the North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) Offshore Compression Complexes project, with a total contract value of approximately USD 4 billion.
Project Scope and Technical Specifications
The five-year contract encompasses the engineering, procurement, fabrication, and installation of two comprehensive compression complexes. Each complex will include a compression platform, a living quarter platform, a flare platform supporting the gas combustion system, and interconnecting bridges. The massive scale of the project is reflected in the weight specifications, with each complex totaling approximately 68,000 tons.
Offshore installation operations are scheduled to be carried out by Saipem's De He construction vessel, with work planned for approximately 2029 and 2030. The COMP5 package represents a significant engineering undertaking as part of Qatar's strategy to maintain and increase production capacity at the North Field.
Strategic Importance of North Field Operations
The NFPS project forms a crucial component of QatarEnergy LNG's broader strategy to sustain and enhance production capabilities at the North Field. This facility holds the distinction of being the world's largest “non-associated” natural gas field and is strategically positioned off the north-eastern coast of Qatar. The compression complexes are designed to support the long-term viability and expanded output of this critical energy infrastructure, reinforcing Qatar's position as a major global liquefied natural gas supplier.
