Sunrun announced on November 3, 2026, that participation in its Puerto Rico distributed power plant has doubled to more than 60,000 customers, representing nearly 70,000 home batteries.
Distributed Power Plant Delivers 45 MW to Puerto Rico Grid
The company, America's largest provider of home battery storage, solar, and home-to-grid power plants, said the distributed power plant frequently and reliably delivers 45 megawatts of dispatchable power for four hours at a time, providing critical support to Puerto Rico's electric grid.
The announcement comes as the island's grid operator calls on home batteries to help prevent outages during periods of severe energy shortfall.
60 Dispatches Since April, 18 Straight Days in October
Since April, Sunrun has dispatched its Puerto Rico power plant more than 60 times to help overcome severe energy shortfalls and prevent rolling blackouts.
During an extended period of unseasonably hot temperatures this fall, the company dispatched its home batteries to the grid for 18 consecutive days beginning October 13.
According to the company, that stretch demonstrated how thousands of home batteries can be coordinated into a flexible resource that delivers power when the grid is most stressed.

Rapid Growth Since 2024
Sunrun's Puerto Rico distributed power plant has scaled rapidly in a short period.
In 2024, approximately 4,000 customers were enrolled. Enrollment surged to more than 30,000 customers in 2025 and has since expanded to more than 60,000 today.
Sunrun is the largest aggregator in Puerto Rico's Customer Battery Energy Sharing (CBES) program.
Grid Operator Credits Home Batteries With Preventing Outages
Puerto Rico's electric utility operator, LUMA, said in June and again in July that energy from home batteries helped "maintain system stability and prevent outages that would have affected thousands of customers."
The public statements noted that LUMA "overcame generation shortfalls and avoided the previously announced load shedding."
An Island Accustomed to Outages
The increased dispatching capacity comes against a backdrop of persistent reliability problems.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Puerto Rico residents experienced an average of 36 hours of power outages in 2025 that were not caused by major events, 19% more than the previous year.
When severe weather is factored in, residents experienced an additional 23 hours of power interruptions.
How the Program Works
Customers who participate in Sunrun's Puerto Rico distributed power plant choose how much energy to share, with most contributing a small portion of their total battery capacity.
The company says this approach ensures participants retain ample reserve for personal backup power in the event of grid outages. Participants are financially compensated for the power they choose to share, while Sunrun generates recurring revenue by operating the distributed power plant.
A Blueprint for the Mainland
Sunrun CEO Mary Powell framed the Puerto Rico program as a model with applications beyond the island.
"What began in Puerto Rico out of necessity for family resilience has become a vital blueprint for the U.S. mainland, where severe weather and the proliferation of AI data centers are demanding new energy solutions," Powell said.
"Sunrun is uniquely positioned to provide these solutions, whether to support a grid at its breaking point or to provide capacity for hyperscalers looking to come online."
Stay Ahead of the United States Power Boom
The power sector is entering one of the most ambitious periods of utility expansion in decades; grid modernization, water treatment upgrades, renewable integration, and transmission builds are all moving from planning boards to construction sites. But with hundreds of billions in capital projects in motion, the real advantage belongs to those who can spot opportunities before the market does.
Fragmented public records, slow-moving news cycles, and scattered tender databases make it nearly impossible for power sector contractors, equipment suppliers, and investors to maintain a clear view of the project landscape. What you need is a single, reliable source that turns raw infrastructure data into actionable intelligence, updated continuously and delivered in one place.
The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research provides precisely that: real-time visibility into power sector projects across the US, from the earliest planning stages through final commissioning, enabling your business development teams to prioritize pipelines, engage stakeholders early, and secure more contracts.
