Ocean Breeze Energy GmbH & Co. KG has selected Deutsche Windtechnik as the service provider for the Alpha Ventus offshore wind farm following what the company describes as a short but intense tender process. The independent service provider will take over maintenance and troubleshooting for all twelve offshore wind turbines at the wind farm from January 2027.

The contract covers all twelve turbines from January 2027

The awarded contract is comprehensive in scope, covering maintenance and troubleshooting of the wind turbines as well as associated technical support. From September 2027, additional services will be added, including remote monitoring, the Marine Coordination Centre/Offshore Control Centre (MCC/OCC), grid management, and 24/7 alarm handling for all wind turbines.

Deutsche Windtechnik prevailed in the tender thanks to a tailored, cost-optimized proposal, strong technical competence and experience with both turbine types deployed at the site, as well as many years of experience at the alpha ventus offshore wind farm itself. Both companies have committed to a partnership approach under the agreement. Ocean Breeze Energy will retain design responsibility, known as third-level management.

A New Era for Germany's First Offshore Wind Farm

Alpha Ventus, Germany's first offshore wind farm and a key test field for the development of offshore wind energy, is entering a new era under Ocean Breeze Energy as its new owner.

The continued operation of the pioneering wind farm has been confirmed. With the award of this service contract, Ocean Breeze Energy is placing its trust in Deutsche Windtechnik's proven expertise.

The Bremen-based service provider already knows the wind farm well from years of prior collaboration. Since 2017, the company has been responsible for the basic maintenance of the six Senvion 5M turbines, followed by the six AREVA Multibrid (M5000) turbines in early 2020. Both of those contracts expired at the end of 2024.

Today, Deutsche Windtechnik positions itself as a leading independent service provider for both turbine types, with comprehensive expertise gained in numerous European onshore and offshore projects.

Technical Competence and Partnership Cited as Decisive Factors

The combination of technical expertise and a partnership approach played a crucial role in the decision to award the contract to Deutsche Windtechnik.

Jean Huby, CEO of Ocean Breeze Energy, said, "We are looking forward to working in partnership with Deutsche Windtechnik. With our OEM-level technology competence and an experienced partner such as Deutsche Windtechnik, we want to use the existing infrastructure to the full and continue generating North Sea power and making a positive contribution to the energy transition and European net zero agenda."

Achim Berge Olsen, CEO of Deutsche Windtechnik Offshore und Consulting, said, "Deutsche Windtechnik has supported the Alpha Ventus project in many ways over the years. We are therefore particularly pleased to demonstrate our comprehensive competence for both turbine types used, AREVA Multibrid and Senvion, under the new shareholder. Through our enhanced presence at the service location in Borkum, from where we already operate two projects, we are able to respond quickly on site."

Borkum Offshore Cluster Gains Further Importance

A strategic advantage of the collaboration lies in Deutsche Windtechnik's systematic expansion of its presence in the Borkum offshore cluster. With contracts for the Riffgat offshore wind farm and now also Alpha Ventus, two significant projects are being added alongside the existing Trianel Wind Farm Borkum I. From the island of Borkum, the company now operates three offshore wind farms in total, a configuration that enables considerable synergies.

Shared resources and well-established on-site expertise enable short troubleshooting response times, efficient logistics, and optimal deployment planning for service teams. According to the announcement, the growing Borkum portfolio creates ideal conditions for reliable and cost-efficient service.

Background on Two Companies

Ocean Breeze Energy specializes in the operation and lifetime extension of offshore wind farms. It is the owner and operator of the North Sea wind farms BARD Offshore 1, with a capacity of 400 MW, and alpha ventus, with 60 MW.

With over 90 wind turbines in its portfolio, the company, which maintains offices in Bremen and Emden, contributes to the energy transition toward climate neutrality. Ocean Breeze Energy is 100 per cent owned by funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management.

Deutsche Windtechnik AG, also headquartered in Bremen, is one of the leading independent service providers for the technical maintenance of wind turbines. The company offers a complete package for the maintenance and upkeep of leading turbine manufacturers from a single source across Europe, North America and Taiwan, both onshore and offshore.

In the offshore sector, it has many years of experience in the maintenance of wind turbines and substations, and offers service concepts ranging from maintenance and repair to large component replacement, subsea services, and technical asset management for efficient and safe wind farm operations.
