Samsung is constructing a 2.7 million square feet building for its USD 17 billion chip plant in Taylor, Texas. The city of Taylor has designated a local engineering company to roll out development and inspection services for its new building named “Samsung Fabrication Plant 2” in the city.
The second fabrication plant is part of the USD 17 billion project announced by Samsung in 2021. The project broke ground last year and will start its operations in 2024. According to sources, the investment amount has risen to USD 25 billion due to the increased cost of raw materials and construction.
The new building will house a portion of the chip fabrication line and it will also house maintenance facilities. The campus will cover an area of more than 1200 acres which is almost twice as large as Samsung's flagship Pyrongtaek campus in South Korea. The main objective of this site is to be vertically integrated and self-reliant as much as possible. Samsung aims to catch up with TSMC - one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing companies in the world.
The Taylor Semiconductor fabrication plant in partnership with Groq’s American AI chip designer Groq will mass produce its chips on its 4 nanometer technology by the end of 2024. Samsung also forged a partnership with Canadian semiconductor manufacturer Tenstorrent.
Samsung's semiconductor factory in Taylor represents a significant investment in the future of semiconductor manufacturing and the economic development of Texas. The company has partnered with various local and international companies for the Taylor semiconductor project, including:
The Taylor facility will contribute to diversifying the global semiconductor supply chain, reducing reliance on manufacturing in a single region. Furthermore, the project will stimulate economic growth in Taylor and Central Texas by creating jobs, attracting businesses, and boosting tax revenue.
