RWE (renewable energy company) has secured a contract through the Federal Network Agency's latest tender process to repower its Rethen-Vordorf onshore wind farm in the district of Gifhorn, Lower Saxony, replacing three existing turbines with three modern equivalents and quadrupling total installed capacity from 5.4 to 21 megawatts.
Same Turbine Count, Four Times the Output
The repowering project will see RWE maintain the existing number of turbines at the Rethen-Vordorf site while dramatically increasing their generating potential.
The upgraded wind farm is expected to supply electricity to around 17,000 households once operational. Construction is due to begin shortly, with commissioning scheduled for the end of 2027.
Sopna Sury, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe and Australia, said the project illustrated the broader opportunity presented by modernising ageing wind infrastructure.
"We will have the same number of turbines, but with four times the capacity. Here in Rethen-Vordorf in Lower Saxony, we will generate more power from the same site. This demonstrates the potential of modernising older wind farms," she said.
The project represents a contract win in a competitive auction environment, with the Federal Network Agency administering the tender through which RWE secured its position.
The agency oversees Germany's renewable energy auction system, which allocates support contracts for new and repowered generating capacity across the country.
Financial Benefits for Surrounding Communities
Beyond the electricity generation uplift, RWE has outlined a financial benefit structure for local authorities and community projects in the area surrounding the Rethen-Vordorf site.
The company will pay a total of 0.3 cents per kilowatt-hour generated to surrounding local authorities and projects. Of that total, 0.1 cents per kilowatt-hour represents the amount stipulated under Lower Saxony's Participation Act, a regional requirement that mandates financial contributions to host communities from wind energy projects operating in the state.
Sury said the combined payment rate would equate to an annual revenue of up to 165,000 euros for the surrounding area. The figure reflects the higher generating output expected from the repowered installation compared with the legacy turbines currently on site.
Community benefit mechanisms tied to renewable energy projects have become an increasingly prominent feature of onshore wind development in Germany, with several federal states introducing or strengthening participation requirements in recent years.
Lower Saxony's Participation Act forms part of that regulatory trend, requiring developers to direct a share of revenues toward the localities that host wind infrastructure.
