The Government of Oman and Hydrom have signed a joint study agreement with the Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals, and GasLog. This study will focus on the development of a liquid hydrogen supply chain that will deliver Omani green hydrogen to the Amsterdam port and the rest of Europe. This project is claimed to be the world’s first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor.

Oman Signs Joint Study Agreement For Green Hydrogen Project

The joint study agreement was signed during the COP28 summit in Dubai. Developing a green hydrogen corridor connecting the Netherlands and the Sultanate of Oman is the principal objective of the agreement.

In a press release, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals Oman stated that the agreement mainly focuses on conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the prerequisites for the establishment of a hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and export facility with open access in the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to the procurement of specialised vessels for the conveyance of the liquid hydrogen, which GasLog is currently developing.

The open-access liquefaction facility in Oman will give the country an opportunity to export liquefied green hydrogen to other global markets. The government of the Sultanate of Oman has implemented a hydrogen strategy that aims to leverage the nation's plentiful natural resources (including wind and solar power) and pre-existing port and industrial infrastructures in advance of its long-term objective of achieving Net-Zero by 2050 and Oman's Vision 2040, which is centred around economic diversification away from oil and gas.

An agreement was signed between Oman and the Netherlands during COP 27, which focused on bolstering cooperation and investment prospects within import and export facilities for clean, domestically produced hydrogen.

What is green hydrogen liquefaction?
Green hydrogen liquefaction is the process of converting green hydrogen, which is produced from renewable energy sources like solar, wind, or hydropower, into liquid hydrogen. Liquid hydrogen is a high-energy-density fuel that can be stored and transported more easily than gaseous hydrogen. This makes it a promising option for long-haul transportation and energy storage. The liquefaction process requires cooling hydrogen to its boiling point of -252.8°C (423°F). This is typically done using a series of heat exchangers and compressors. The liquefied hydrogen is then stored in cryogenic tanks that are specially designed to keep it cold.
