The Spanish government has awarded three green hydrogen projects with a combined capacity of 485 MW up to GBP 377 m in production subsidies. The projects, named EP2X, eM-Numancia, and Orange.bat, will receive GBP 246 million (USD 287 million), GBP 44 million (USD 51 million), and GBP 83 million (USD 97 million), respectively, through the country's EU-backed Auction-as-a-Service programme. These developments will receive subsidies of up to €0.69/kg for ten years.
Project Details
The EP2X project, developed by ErasmoPower2X, will pair 1.2 GW of solar PV with 325 MW of electrolysis in Saceruela, Ciudad Real. The project aims to produce 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, which will be used for e-methanol production. Elyse Energy's eM-Numancia project in Garray, Soria, also targets e-methanol production by combining a 60 MW electrolyser with CO₂ captured from nearby biogenic sources. Orange.bat, a 100 MW electrolysis project by Swiss-based Smartenergy, is located in Onda, Castellón, and aims to displace natural gas use in industrial kilns with green hydrogen.
Financial Impact
The awarded subsidy rates are in line with those set under the European Hydrogen Bank's second auction. The subsidies will be provided through a €400m Recovery, Transformation and Resilience fund. The three projects are expected to produce 585,860 tonnes of renewable hydrogen over a ten-year period.
Broader Ambition
The awards form part of Spain's broader ambition to become a European hydrogen hub. The government unveiled plans to see green hydrogen meet 74% of its industrial hydrogen demand by 2030 and trebled its installed electrolyser capacity target to 12 GW. With these projects, Spain is taking a significant step towards achieving its hydrogen goals. The country's abundant renewable resources, strong port infrastructure, and growing domestic demand make it an attractive location for green hydrogen production.
