NTPC Limited has signed a Non-Binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Électricité de France (EDF) to explore cooperation in developing new nuclear power projects in India. The agreement follows approval from the concerned ministries and departments of the Government of India.

Agreement Details and Signatories

The MoU was signed by Arnada Prasad Samal, CGM (Nuclear Cell), representing NTPC, and Vakisasi Ramany, Senior Vice President, International Nuclear Development, representing EDF. The agreement establishes a framework for both companies to jointly assess the feasibility and approach for collaboration in nuclear power development.

Scope of Collaboration

According to a press release by NTPC, the MoU covers several key areas of cooperation. The framework includes understanding EDF's EPR technology and its suitability for Indian requirements. The companies will explore opportunities to maximize localization for large-scale deployment of nuclear power projects.

The collaboration will also examine economic and tariff aspects of nuclear power development. Both companies plan to develop human resource capabilities through training programs. The agreement includes provisions for evaluating potential project sites and providing technical support as mutually agreed between the parties.

NTPC's Strategic Objectives

This initiative aligns with NTPC's strategy to expand into clean, reliable energy and contribute to India's long-term energy security. The agreement represents part of the company's broader diversification efforts in the energy sector.

NTPC Limited operates as India's largest integrated power utility, currently managing more than 89 GW of installed capacity. The company has another 32 GW of capacity under construction, demonstrating its ongoing expansion efforts.

Company Targets and Business Expansion

NTPC has set a target to reach 149 GW of total capacity by 2032, with 60 GW planned to come from renewable energy sources. The company maintains a balanced mix of thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power plants to ensure a supply of reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to the country.

Beyond traditional power generation, NTPC has ventured into various new business areas. The company's diversification includes e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, and waste-to-energy projects. NTPC has also expanded into nuclear power and green hydrogen solutions as part of its broader energy portfolio strategy.
