The Nautical SUNRISE aims to support the world’s largest offshore floating solar power installation. The USD 9 million project, which received USD 7 million from the Horizon Europe program, began in December 2023 to carry out research and development on offshore floating solar (OFS) systems and their components.

The project's outcomes will enable the large-scale deployment and commercialization of OFS systems in the future, both as standalone systems and integrated into offshore wind farms.

The project aims to design, build, and showcase a 5 MW offshore floating solar system using the modular solution of the Dutch floating solar company, SolarDuck. With RWE providing the investment for the installation and deployment, the system is planned to be electrically integrated, certified, and located within RWE’s OranjeWind (Hollandse Kust West VII) wind farm off the west coast of the Netherlands.

Before offshore deployment, the Nautical SUNRISE consortium will conduct extensive research and testing to ensure offshore floating solar systems' reliability, survivability, electrical stability, and yield. A comprehensive scale-up plan will address the challenges and create opportunities to accelerate the commercialization of offshore floating solar systems.

About Nautical Sunrise Project

The Nautical SUNRISE project is a European initiative launched in December 2023 that aims to advance the development and deployment of offshore floating solar (OFS) power plants.

Objective

Design, build, and showcase a 5 MW offshore floating solar system integrated with the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. This will be the world's largest OFS system upon completion.

Consortium

The Dutch Marine Energy Centre (DMEC), SolarDuck, RWE, Blunova Bridon-Bekaert, Deltares, Hasselt University (UHasselt), KU Leuven, Oxford PV, SINTEF Industry, SINTEF Ocean, The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC-CERCA), INESC TEC, and WavEC Offshore Renewables are carrying out the project.

Project Location

The Nautical SUNRISE project will be located off the coast of the Netherlands, integrated into the RWE's OranjeWind offshore wind farm, 53 kilometers away from the Dutch coast.

OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm

The OranjeWind is an offshore wind farm under development by RWE, a German multinational energy company. It will be located 53 kilometers off the Dutch coast at the Hollandse Kust West (HKW) VII site.

The wind farm will have an installed capacity of almost 800 MW, which is enough to power around 800,000 homes. It is expected to start producing renewable electricity in 2027.
