ESB has energized its first wholly-owned solar farm, Bullstown, located in County Meath, marking a significant milestone in the company's renewable energy expansion plans. The solar farm generates 8.4 MW of power, sufficient to supply electricity to over 2,000 homes annually.

Project Development and Timeline

Construction of the multi-million-euro solar farm commenced on the 44-acre site in January 2024. The project was delivered for ESB through partnerships with Greencells and Powercomm. The Bullstown solar farm represents part of ESB's broader ambition to develop 1.2 GW of solar capacity by 2030.

Community Benefits and Local Impact

Following the energization of the site, ESB plans to launch the Bullstown solar farm community benefit fund in early 2026. This fund will distribute grants to local organizations, providing direct financial benefits to the surrounding community.

ESB's Renewable Energy Strategy

The Bullstown project forms part of ESB's Net Zero by 2040 strategy, which includes a commitment to deliver more than a fivefold increase in renewable generation to 5,000 MW. Solar energy plays an essential role in this strategy alongside offshore and onshore wind, battery, and green hydrogen projects. Eoin Naughton, Solar Development Manager at ESB, stated:

Over the past year, solar energy production has experienced exponential growth, and Bullstown marks a significant milestone in our journey towards delivering 1.2 GW of solar capacity by 2030. This energization is just the first of many solar projects we will deliver – supporting Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future whilst bolstering our energy independence.”

According to Naughton, this energization represents just the first of many solar projects the company plans to deliver as part of its renewable energy expansion program.
