Gautam Solar Private Limited (GSPL), a leading solar module manufacturer, has unveiled plans to invest INR 4,000 crore in a solar cell manufacturing facility in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The plant is designed to reach a 5 GW capacity, signalling a significant expansion of India's solar manufacturing base.
Project Specifications and Timeline
The project will occupy 54 acres in Gwalior and focus on producing advanced TOPCon solar cells. GSPL has begun work on Phase 1, which will establish 2 GW of production capacity. This stage is slated for completion by 2026. Once Phase 1 is completed, the company intends to launch an initial public offering (IPO) to fund Phase 2, which will add another 3 GW of capacity. The two-phase approach will ultimately deliver the full 5 GW capacity planned for the facility.
Technology and Manufacturing Integration
The facility will deploy the latest TOPCon technology for solar cell production. Gautam Mohanka, Director at Gautam Solar, emphasized that this facility will be among the largest solar cell units in India, deploying the latest TOPCon technology. Gautam Solar plans to move into wafer manufacturing, aiming to build an integrated solar value chain, from wafers to modules, within India. The new plant stands to boost the company's integrated manufacturing capabilities beyond its current operations.

Current Operations and Expansion Goals
Currently, GSPL operates multiple plants across India, with module manufacturing capacity reportedly at 3.2 GW. The company is aiming to reach 5 GW by the financial year 2025-26. The new Gwalior facility represents a separate expansion of the company's solar cell manufacturing capabilities.
Strategic Impact and National Objectives
The initiative is expected to reduce dependence on imports and support national goals on renewable energy and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The project is positioned not just as a manufacturing milestone for the company, but a building block for the country's self-reliant solar ecosystem. The investment marks a pivotal moment in India's renewable energy journey, bringing manufacturing depth, enhancing supply-chain resilience, and reinforcing GSPL's role in shaping a domestically anchored solar ecosystem.
The facility represents a significant expansion of India's solar manufacturing base through the establishment of advanced solar cell production capabilities in Madhya Pradesh.
