A batch of advanced modular pharmaceutical manufacturing modules has begun its journey from China to Singapore, marking a major milestone in AstraZeneca's expansion of its Singapore operations.

A shipment ceremony for the AstraZeneca Singapore Operations modular project was held on October 28th at the Pharmadule Morimatsu Suzhou manufacturing site, signaling the project's transition from the manufacturing phase to on-site construction.

Shipment Marks Shift to Site Construction

The modules are bound for AstraZeneca's Tuas South manufacturing site in Singapore. According to Morimatsu LifeSciences, the ceremony officially launched the shipment of the modular units, closing out the fabrication stage and opening the on-site construction phase of the project.

Attending the ceremony were Paul Si, Project Director of AstraZeneca; Weihua Tang, CEO of Morimatsu LifeSciences; and Daoquan Li, CEO of Morimatsu Pharmadule (China).

Scope: The ADC Conjugation Building

Pharmadule Morimatsu is responsible for the design and construction of the antibody drug conjugate (ADC) conjugation building, which is described as a core component of AstraZeneca's Singapore Operations facility.

The scope spans critical project phases, including engineering, procurement, manufacturing, commissioning, and international logistics, all coordinated by Pharmadule Morimatsu.

The company said the team worked closely with AstraZeneca through an efficient project governance framework that enabled seamless cross-functional and cross-regional teamwork.

Challenges Addressed During Execution

Morimatsu LifeSciences listed several challenges the project team had to overcome: the project's large scale, a tight schedule, stringent quality requirements, high expectations for modular integration, complex international stakeholder coordination, and demanding logistics constraints.

Supported by a mature project management system and extensive international project delivery experience, the team executed the project in accordance with AstraZeneca's global engineering and quality standards, the company stated.

It also pointed to Pharmadule Morimatsu's extensive expertise in modular engineering as the foundation for managing the project's critical phases.

Phased Shipping Aligned With Site Lifting Schedule

A carefully planned phased shipping strategy was used so that module deliveries would be precisely aligned with the site's lifting and installation schedule. According to the company, this approach was intended to ensure smooth and uninterrupted onsite execution.

The strategy also mitigated transportation constraints associated with large-scale modules while maximizing the benefits of offsite fabrication. Morimatsu LifeSciences said the approach significantly reduced onsite construction activities while improving overall project efficiency, quality control, and delivery certainty.

Milestone Reached in Under Six Months

From the commencement of module fabrication to the completion of Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), the project reached this key shipment milestone in less than six months.

Morimatsu LifeSciences said the achievement demonstrates Pharmadule Morimatsu's comprehensive execution capabilities in delivering large-scale international biopharmaceutical projects.

It added that the milestone provides a solid foundation for the subsequent site construction phase and the rapid realization of future production capacity.

Executive Perspective

Daoquan Li, CEO of Morimatsu Pharmadule (China), described the project as an important achievement in the deepening partnership between the two companies.

"The AstraZeneca Singapore project represents an important achievement in the deepening partnership between our two companies and stands as another benchmark project showcasing Pharmadule Morimatsu's commitment to serving the global biopharmaceutical industry," Li stated.

"The successful progress of the project reflects the trust, collaboration, and dedication shared by both teams. Together with AstraZeneca, we are advancing the development of world-class biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity and providing strong support for the research, development, and production of innovative medicines."

The company framed the delivery as more than the transportation of modular production facilities, calling it a reflection of the shared commitment of AstraZeneca and Pharmadule Morimatsu to innovation, quality, and collaboration, as well as a common mission to improve patient health.

Looking ahead, Pharmadule Morimatsu said it will continue to connect global innovation through its engineering expertise, helping accelerate the transformation of biopharmaceutical breakthroughs into therapies that improve and protect lives around the world.
