Larsen & Toubro has secured land in Kandla, Gujarat, for the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects. The company's Chairman & Managing Director, S N Subrahmanyan, announced this development, stating that L&T has made significant advances in emerging clean energy segments, particularly green hydrogen and small modular reactors (SMRs).

Green Hydrogen Initiatives

The government is actively promoting green hydrogen as a clean energy source with initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission and pilot projects focused on its use in transportation. L&T had earlier announced the incorporation of L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd for the development of green hydrogen projects. Hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of water and powered by renewable energy is known as green hydrogen.

Manufacturing and EPC Projects

Land has been secured in Kandla, Gujarat, for manufacturing green hydrogen and green ammonia units. L&T is also capable of executing EPC projects in green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol globally. The company's electrolyser manufacturing is already in progress, giving it a first-mover advantage in green hydrogen.

Future Goals

Although L&T has set off with global partners for both green hydrogen and SMRs, its long-term goal is to develop proprietary technology, manufacture core equipment, and deliver cost-effective, innovative solutions tailored for emerging markets. The company has received regulatory approval from the US Department of Energy for the transfer of SMR technology to India, signaling the formal start of its SMR journey. Larsen & Toubro's efforts in securing land for green hydrogen and ammonia projects in Gujarat mark a significant step in the company's clean energy initiatives, aligning with the government's promotion of green hydrogen as a clean energy source, and the company is poised to play a key role in the development and commercialization of these technologies.
