GIGA Storage has acquired the GIGA Albatross project, a 350MW / 1,400MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) located near Neuenkirchen in Lower Saxony, Germany. The acquisition marks a significant step in the Dutch company’s strategy to scale its presence across key European energy markets.

Strategic Expansion into Germany

The project, originally developed by Isenau Projects, is positioned in one of Germany’s most critical power corridors and is expected to provide vital grid services, including renewable energy integration, frequency regulation, and local congestion management.

“Project Albatross reinforces our ambitions to become a leading player in European energy storage,” said Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage. “Germany is a pivotal market for BESS, and this project will serve as an anchor for our growth in the region.”

Technical and Financial Backing

GIGA Storage will lead the ongoing development of the project, bringing its technical expertise and operational capabilities to advance it to ready-to-build status. The acquisition is supported by InfraVia Capital Partners, a major European infrastructure investor and the majority shareholder in GIGA Storage.

InfraVia’s involvement ensures both capital strength and strategic backing as GIGA Storage pursues its broader goal of deploying multiple gigawatts of battery storage capacity across the continent.

Project Origin and Development Model

Isenau Projects, a German developer focused on grid-scale energy storage, originated the Albatross project and has been instrumental in advancing it from greenfield to pre-construction stages. The firm specializes in milestone-based partnerships and co-development strategies aimed at de-risking large infrastructure assets.

The transaction underscores a growing trend in the European energy storage market, where collaborative development and capital-intensive scaling are becoming increasingly essential to meet the demands of grid decarbonisation.

Broader Market Context

Germany’s rapid shift toward renewables, coupled with its decision to phase out nuclear and coal-fired generation, has created both challenges and opportunities for grid operators. Large-scale BESS assets like Project Albatross are expected to play a key role in maintaining system reliability and enabling higher renewable penetration.

With its entry into the German market, GIGA Storage strengthens its position as a key player in Europe’s energy transition.
