The strategic investment targets Accelsius's specialized cooling technology, which utilizes “phase change” from liquid to vapor to remove heat, enabling more efficient heat extraction with reduced energy consumption. Two-phase solutions represent an advancement in data center cooling technology, addressing the critical need for efficient temperature management of computer chips that are foundational to the digital economy.
Austin Domenici, Vice President and General Manager of Johnson Controls Global Data Center Solutions, stated that with the sharp growth in AI, cooling innovation has become a frontline imperative to meet the increasing demands of high-density data centers. Johnson Controls aims to leverage its leading capabilities to drive the industry forward and unlock new levels of energy efficiency across the cooling chain.
Accelsius Technology and Cost Benefits
Josh Claman, CEO of Accelsius, explained that with power-dense AI workloads, data centers are moving to liquid cooling. Accelsius's two-phase, direct-to-chip (D2C) cooling solutions use non-conductive fluids in highly efficient loops to stay ahead of demanding power-dense AI and HPC workloads. The technology enables specific cost savings, including 35% operational expenditure (OpEx) savings over single-phase direct-to-chip solutions and 8-17% total cost of ownership savings.
