Lithuania-based energy company Ignitis Group has announced that its subsidiary, Ignitis Renewables, has commenced commercial operations at the 173.6 MW Tume solar farm in Latvia.
The project, located in Tukums municipality, is described as one of the largest solar energy projects in the Baltic region.
Commercial operations begin at one of the Baltic region's largest solar projects
The solar farm covers 302 hectares and is equipped with more than 282,000 solar panels. According to Ignitis Group, the facility is expected to provide enough electricity to meet the demand of approximately 85,000 households.
The company stated that the project will support local renewable energy production and contribute to regional energy security in Latvia. Investment in the Tume solar farm will total up to USD 119 million.
Battery storage system under construction at the site
In a further development at the site, Ignitis Renewables is constructing a battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to be integrated with the solar farm. The 107.2 MW/214.5 MWh Tume BESS aims to improve the solar farm's operational efficiency and flexibility.
Ignitis Group made a final investment decision regarding the Tume BESS in July this year. The system remains under construction.

Green capacity grows to 2.3 GW.
Following the start of commercial operations at Tume, Ignitis Group's installed green capacities have increased to 2.3 GW, up from 2.1 GW.
Earlier financing supported Baltic wind development
The Tume milestone comes after other recent developments in Ignitis Group's renewable energy portfolio.
In October 2025, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) lent USD 92.3 million to Ignitis Group to support the construction of the largest onshore wind farm in the Baltic region.
The loan formed part of a total USD 356.75 million financing package intended to strengthen Lithuania's energy security and advance the country's transition to green energy. The comprehensive financing included contributions from the European Investment Bank, Swedbank, and the Nordic Investment Bank.
This funding enabled Ignitis Group to complete its 314 MW wind farm project in Kelmė, located in western Lithuania. Once operational, the Kelmė wind farm generates 740 GWh of zero-carbon electricity a year, enough to supply approximately 250,000 households.
Change in Northern Europe Power Sector: Navigating the Future of Energy
The energy sector in Northern Europe is experiencing a pivotal transformation, fueled by advancements in grid technology, mandates for decarbonization, and increasing energy consumption. Any delay in recognizing new substation projects or transmission expansions could result in lost multi-million-euro opportunities.
The energy sector is undergoing significant changes, making manual tracking of developments across various national markets both inefficient and prone to errors. The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research offers a comprehensive solution by integrating project intelligence from Northern Europe's utilities landscape into a unified, actionable dashboard.
