SD Guthrie Berhad has signed a collaboration agreement with Gamuda Energy Sdn Bhd to jointly develop, own, and operate solar power projects, including energy storage systems, with a combined target capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. The partnership combines Guthrie's extensive land bank across Malaysia with Gamuda's technical expertise and a renewable energy pipeline exceeding 3GW across the Asia Pacific.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

The collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for renewable energy from high-quality offtakers, particularly industrial and data centre operators seeking scalable, fast-tracked clean power solutions. Together, the companies will develop solar power projects that include energy storage systems as part of their comprehensive approach to renewable energy infrastructure.

Guthrie brings its extensive nationwide landbank to the partnership, while Gamuda contributes its technical expertise in renewable energy development. Gamuda has previously delivered large-scale solar farms in Malaysia and overseas, and maintains a renewable infrastructure portfolio that spans solar, wind, hydro, pumped hydro, battery storage, and transmission projects.

Strategic Vision and Business Development

Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Group Managing Director of Guthrie, stated that renewable energy is one of two new business verticals that the company has identified as a pillar of Guthrie's future. He emphasized that renewable energy is critical both as a sustainable revenue stream and in supporting the company's net-zero ambitions.

At the national level, Helmy noted that the initiative advances Malaysia's push to decarbonise its electricity sector. The partnership will create value by supplying renewable energy under frameworks such as the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), while enhancing the long-term value of Guthrie's land portfolio.

Gamuda noted that the collaboration strengthens its renewable infrastructure portfolio and that the joint venture with Guthrie, which owns the largest nationwide landbank for renewable energy deployment, uniquely positions the companies to deliver renewable energy solutions at scale.

Current Projects and Implementation Timeline

Guthrie's first solar project under the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP) is a 15MW plant located in Bukit Selarong, Kedah, which is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2025. This project represents the initial step in Guthrie's renewable energy development strategy. In the first phase of the collaboration between Guthrie and Gamuda, the companies will identify underutilised land assets suitable for solar power development.

This phase will focus on evaluating Guthrie's extensive land holdings to determine the most suitable locations for solar power infrastructure development.

Company Capabilities and Market Position

Gamuda Energy brings significant experience to the partnership, having delivered large-scale solar farms both in Malaysia and internationally. The company cited its partnerships and stake in ERS Energy as additional strengths that will benefit the joint venture. Gamuda's renewable energy pipeline exceeds 3GW across the Asia Pacific region, demonstrating the company's substantial capacity for large-scale renewable energy development.

The partnership positions both companies to address the increasing demand from industrial and data centre operators who require reliable, scalable, clean power solutions that can be deployed quickly. The combination of Guthrie's land assets and Gamuda's technical expertise creates a comprehensive platform for renewable energy development across Malaysia.
