The foundation stone for the Barethi solar power project, with a capacity of 630 MW, was laid in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district. The project's estimated cost is approximately USD 387 million, and NTPC Renewable Energy Limited is developing it. The project falls under Mode-8 of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy’s Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Parks scheme.

During the ceremony, Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, RK Singh, and Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar, attended via video conferencing. Singh highlighted the government's significant strides in the power sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that the power sector's capacity has nearly doubled in the last decade.

Additionally, the government has provided electricity connections to every village in the country, with rural areas enjoying more than 22 hours of power availability and urban areas more than 23 hours. Moreover, around 3,000 substations have been added, and approximately 4,000 have been upgraded.

In his address, Minister Kumar emphasized the Barethi solar power project's potential to enhance regional development. He also underscored the government's commitment to promoting solar power in agriculture, although specifics on the implementation were not provided.

The primary objective of the Barethi Solar Power Project is to provide clean and sustainable energy to the region. The project, with a capacity of 630 MW, is expected to provide electricity to more than 300,000 households upon completion. This will significantly improve the availability of power in the region, with the power supply expected to increase to more than 22 hours in rural areas and more than 23 hours in urban areas.

Furthermore, the Barethi Solar Power Project also aims to boost the region's development. The project entails an investment of Rs 3,200 crore, which is expected to stimulate economic activity in the region. What is the Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Parks scheme?

The Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Parks (UMREPPs) scheme is a program by the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to set up large-scale solar power generation facilities. 

Under the scheme, the Ministry provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of up to Rs. 25 lakh per solar park for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Besides this, a CFA of up to Rs. 20 lakh per MW, or 30% of the project cost, including the grid connectivity cost, whichever is lower, is also provided for achieving the milestones prescribed in the scheme.
