Google to Develop $1 Billion Data Center in Kansas City, USA

Google has announced plans to construct a sprawling data center in Kansas City's Northland, marking its first such facility in Missouri and representing a significant investment of USD 1 billion.The new Google data center location is poised to play a crucial role in supporting Google's artificial intelligence (AI) innovations and expanding its cloud business. It will also power popular digital services like Google Cloud, Workspace, Search, and Maps for users worldwide. Additionally, the project is expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs.

 

 

The construction is already underway. Monique Picou, Google’s global vice president of cloud supply chain and operations, emphasized the broader impact of the project, stating that the "halo of jobs" related to the data center includes roles in logistics and warehousing operations.

Google has partnered with Evergy to power and is collaborating with Ranger Power and D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) to bring 400 MW of renewable energy, aligning with the company’s commitment to carbon-free energy.

 

Picou underscored the significance of data centers as an "inflection point" for tech innovation, particularly in AI, emphasizing their role as the "backbone of this progress." She expressed Google's commitment to benefiting the community and contributing to the region's bright future.  The decision to establish the new data center campus at Hunt Midwest Business Center reflects a culmination of long-term vision and teamwork involving various stakeholders.

 

While specific details regarding public incentives for the project are not immediately available, a spokesman for Missouri Gov. Mike Parson clarified that Google is not currently receiving direct incentives from the state.

Objectives of the Project

This USD 1 billion investment is not just a testament to Google's commitment to growth, but also a strategic move aimed at bolstering its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and cloud business.

 

The primary objective of this project is to support Google's AI innovations and its growing cloud business. As Monique Picou, Google’s global vice president of cloud supply chain and operations, stated, "AI is the future." 

 

In addition to the data center, Google also plans to expand a skilled trade career development program and contribute $100,000 to the North Kansas City School District's alternative education STEAM program. This initiative underscores Google's commitment to fostering local talent and contributing to the community's educational infrastructure.
