Google has announced a USD 15 billion investment in Malaysia to be deployed over the next two years, from 2027 to 2028, covering energy-efficient data center campuses, workforce upskilling for approximately 800,000 Malaysians by 2031, local water security initiatives, and more than 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity for the country's National Grid.

The plan was unveiled in the presence of Prime Minister YAB Dato' Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim and builds on Google's more than 15-year presence in the country.

Infrastructure Expansion Across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan

The investment expands on digital infrastructure commitments Google announced in 2024. The company's footprint in Malaysia includes its first data center campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, which is now operational, along with new planned campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. The computing capacity in Selangor will also support Google's upcoming Google Cloud region in Malaysia for enterprise customers.

Google says the in-country infrastructure will provide the computing capacity needed to run homegrown digital and AI applications, while also powering services such as Search, Maps, and Chrome used daily by millions of people and organizations across Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Google Cloud's full-stack capabilities currently support organizations including AEON360, AirAsia, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, Gamuda, Hong Leong Bank, Maxis, the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre, the Ministry of Digital, and the Ministry of Higher Education in delivering secure, high-performance, low-latency services and scaling custom AI solutions.

Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, said the investment aligns with Malaysia's development priorities, providing foundational computing capacity while adding local power and water resources as operations scale. She noted that Google partners with local suppliers to expand their expertise and equip workers, students, and entrepreneurs with in-demand skills.

YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital, said Google's blueprint sets a high standard for sustainable, high-impact digital infrastructure development, guided by the Malaysia MADANI framework and the Malaysia Digital 2030 Action Plan.

Economic Contribution and Job Creation

Google is working with a domestic supply chain of more than 80 Malaysian entities spanning construction and civil engineering, network infrastructure, power and cooling system components, and services such as logistics, legal, catering, and waste management. The collaboration will continue across the data centers' multi-decade operational lifecycle.

The construction phase of the new campuses, running from 2027 to 2028, is expected to contribute an annual average of USD 1.1 billion to Malaysia's GDP and support more than 37,000 local jobs per year, generating USD 378 million in average annual labor income. Approximately 6,000 of these jobs are estimated to be in construction.

Once operational, the facilities are projected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs per year, with wages averaging 45% above the national median. These roles include long-term, on-site specialist positions such as data center technicians, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, logistics operations managers, and physical security managers, as well as contractor roles with local suppliers and workers at shops, restaurants, and amenities patronized by employees and their families.

Google has already established a full local on-site team for its operations at Elmina Business Park and is actively recruiting local technical and facilities management talent for its other planned campuses.

Context: Malaysia's Digital Economy

Since opening its first local office in 2011, Google has run successive skilling initiatives and developed products tailored to local needs. Google characterizes Malaysia today as one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic digital economies, driven by 99% internet penetration and rapid AI adoption across government agencies, businesses, and consumers.

The plan also includes collaborations to upskill approximately 800,000 Malaysians by 2031, bolster local water security, and add more than 1 GW of clean energy capacity to the National Grid, according to the company's announcement.
