ENGIE has obtained approval from the National Electricity Coordinator (CEN) to commence commercial operation of BESS Coya, located in Chile. The project is the largest battery energy storage system in Latin America. The project boasts a storage capacity of 638 MWh, with an installed capacity of 139 MW.

The Coya PV solar plant (180 MWac) in the Antofagasta Region utilizes lithium batteries as part of its co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology, which facilitates renewable energy storage.
The installed capacity of BESS Coya, made possible by its 232 modules, enables the storage of five hours' worth of electricity. This stored energy is then injected into the grid during peak periods, delivering an average of 200 GWh per year. Moreover, the system plays a crucial environmental role by supplying enough green energy for approximately 100,000 homes, thereby mitigating the emission of 65,000 metric tonnes of CO2 annually.

“This project aligns perfectly with ENGIE's ambition to expedite the development of battery storage, aiming for 10 GW of installed capacity by 2030. The deployment of flexibility solutions like battery energy storage systems will significantly contribute to integrating renewable energies and accelerating the energy transition, ensuring the efficiency, reliability, and security of energy systems,” explained Paulo Almirante, ENGIE Senior Executive Vice President of Renewables & Energy Management.
About ENGIE
ENGIE is a French multinational giant in the energy sector, headquartered near Paris. Founded in 2008 through a merger, it has a long history dating back to the 1800s. ENGIE deals with various aspects of energy, including generation, distribution, and related services. They work across electricity, natural gas, nuclear, and, increasingly, renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
The company is a major player on the global stage. They employ more than 96,000 people worldwide and operate in 31 countries. Interestingly, ENGIE is actively involved in both traditional and sustainable energy solutions.
While they still supply natural gas and are involved with nuclear power, ENGIE is making a significant push towards renewable energy. They are a leader in developing large-scale solar and wind farms and have pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.
This commitment to a sustainable future is reflected in their corporate purpose: to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral world. They focus on reducing energy consumption and providing eco-friendly solutions for their customers.
