ENERCON Receives Certificates for E-175 EP5 Wind Turbines at WindEurope Madrid Event
ENERCON has received the IECRE (International Electrotechnical Commission Relating to Equipment) type certificate for its E-175 EP5 E1 wind turbine at the WindEurope trade fair in Madrid, with the certification body TÜV Süd Industrie Service GmbH (Independent Third-Party Auditor) presenting the documents on April 21, 2026. At the same event, a provisional IECRE type certificate was also issued for the company's newer top model, the E-175 EP5 E2.
Certificates Delivered at WindEurope Stand
The certificates were handed over during a presentation at ENERCON's trade fair stand in Madrid, with representatives from both ENERCON and TÜV Süd in attendance. Those present at the handover included Hannes Bolzmacher, Timo Müller, Paula Pias Peleteiro, Alexander Kupzok, and Enrique Martinez.
Timo Müller, Head of ENERCON Platform Management, described the certificates as important milestones in the market launch of both turbine types.
"They are important milestones in the market launch of the E-175 EP5 models – both the E1 and the higher-yield E2. Both of these turbine types play an important part in our customers' planning. It's therefore good news for them that we can now provide them with the official documents they need for their project approvals," Müller said.
Technical Specifications of the E-175 EP5 Models
The E-175 EP5 E1 and E-175 EP5 E2 are currently ENERCON's most powerful wind turbine types. Both feature rotor diameters of 175 metres. The E1 carries a nominal power output of 6.3 MW, while the E2 is rated at 7.0 MW. ENERCON describes the E-175 EP5 E2 as the central pillar of its market strategy, positioning it as the core of a solution portfolio intended to support customers through what the company calls the next phase of the energy transition.
Yield Improvements and Additional Configurations Announced
Alongside the certificate presentations, ENERCON used WindEurope to announce a series of further optimisations for the E2 model. As of the date of the announcement, an increase in annual energy production of up to 2.8 percent is available for the E2, depending on site conditions, according to Müller.
The company also confirmed that the E2 is now being offered in a 6.0 MW version, in addition to its standard 7.0 MW rating, and that additional operating modes are available to give customers greater flexibility in project planning.
Market Reception and German Approval Rankings
Müller pointed to strong commercial traction for the turbine family, singling out Germany as a specific example. "The E-175 EP5 is being very well received by our customers.
It's exactly the product that the market is looking for. It is top of the rankings of the turbine types most frequently approved in new project approvals in Germany, for example, with a significant lead over the competition," he said.
Hybrid Steel Tower Technology Enables Broad Site Compatibility
Benjamin Seifert, ENERCON Vice President of the Regions Business Unit, highlighted the role of the company's hybrid steel tower technology in expanding the range of sites where the E2 can be deployed.
He stated that the innovative hybrid steel tower technology allows ENERCON to create various tower versions for the E2 with different hub heights, and enables installation at wind class IIA sites.
Seifert described the E2 as a decisive factor for onshore operators seeking to maximise yield across a broad set of conditions. "For many onshore operators, the E2 is thus a decisive factor in maximising yield. This is one of the reasons why it is also featuring in more and more international projects," he said.
International Supply Agreements Already Secured
Seifert also confirmed that the international market launch of the E2 is advancing, with supply agreements already concluded across multiple countries. The markets covered by existing agreements include Germany, Turkey, Canada, the Netherlands, Austria, Lithuania, and Portugal. "The international market launch is progressing very well," Seifert stated.
Generator Production Ramping Up
Separately, ENERCON announced earlier in April that its centre of excellence in Magdeburg is ramping up series production of E-175 EP5 E2 generators, a development the company connected to broader calls for government support on climate and environmental protection.
ENERCON, headquartered in Aurich, Lower Saxony, has an installed total capacity of more than 65 gigawatts across its wind energy projects worldwide and employs around 13,000 people at administrative, sales, production, and service locations globally. The company has been active in onshore wind energy since 1984.
