Egypt has reported three new oil and gas discoveries in its Western Desert and the Gulf of Suez, signaling a significant boost to the country’s energy production. The discoveries were made by Khalda Petroleum, Belayim Petroleum Company (Petrobel), and the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO), in coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The new finds are part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to expand exploration and increase domestic production, in line with government policy aimed at reducing energy imports and enhancing economic resilience.

Major Gas Find in Western Desert

Khalda Petroleum announced the discovery of gas at its South NUT-1 well in the Western Desert. Preliminary data from electrical logs indicated gas-bearing zones with a net thickness of 253 feet. The expected addition to reserves before drilling was estimated at 12.5 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe).

The company is preparing to conduct further pressure measurements and testing to evaluate the full potential of the find. A 23-kilometer, 10-inch production pipeline is also being developed at an investment of approximately USD 10 million to facilitate future output. According to initial forecasts, the well could produce up to 30 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcf/d), substantially increasing Khalda’s production capacity.

Oil Discoveries in the Gulf of Suez

In the Gulf of Suez, Petrobel successfully tested the appraisal well West Feiran-2, producing 2,660 barrels of oil per day (bbl/d) from a 27-meter perforated section in the Asal sands. The company is currently assessing the volume of recoverable reserves.

GUPCO also reported a new find from the exploratory well GS327-A15. Testing of a 38-foot interval in the Kareem sands resulted in a production rate of 720 bbl/d. Like Petrobel’s, GUPCO’s reserve estimates are still under evaluation but are expected to be substantial.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources stated that these discoveries underscore the success of its strategy to enhance exploration activity across Egypt. The increased output is expected to help meet rising domestic energy demand and reduce dependence on foreign energy sources.

“These developments demonstrate the untapped potential of Egypt’s energy reserves and highlight the importance of sustained investment in exploration,” the Ministry said in a statement.
