Chilean renewable energy developer Susterra has submitted a proposal to develop a USD 423 million green hydrogen project that will serve the Calama mining industry in the region of Antofagasta, northern Chile. The proposal to develop electrolyzers is under environmental review.

Susterra intends to install up to 200 MW of electrolysis capacity on land secured under a concession from the Chilean Ministry of National Assets, according to an environmental impact statement (EIS) submitted by the company.

The Green Hydrogen project for the Calama mining district will be carried out in three phases. The project will start with a 20-MW electrolyzer plant in the first phase, which will be expanded to 100 MW in the second phase. In the final phase, the project will have 200 MW electrolyser capacity.
The Valle de los Vientos wind farm in Chile will supply power to the electrolyzers. The project will produce up to 8,988 kg of green hydrogen per day in the first phase, which will be increased to 44,940 kg/day in the second and 89,880 kg/day in the third.
The green hydrogen will be distributed to the Calama mining district. This will contribute to reducing the industry’s carbon footprint by substituting the consumption of fossil fuels in the smelting, refining, transport, and thermal processes.
The project is part of the Chilean government’s Ventana al Futuro (Wind to the Future) program. Under this initiative, the Ministry of National Assets has awarded public land for green hydrogen production. Susterra secured 32.1 acres of land in Calama for this initiative.
