A joint venture between the electrolyzer manufacturer Bloom Energy and SK Ecoplant will deploy SOEC (solid oxide electrolyzer) in the Jeju Island green hydrogen demonstration project in South Korea. Korean Power Co. Ltd. (KOSPO) will be in charge of developing the demonstration project. Furthermore, the Bloom electrolyzer will be combined with SK's engineered infrastructure for the project.

Jeju Island’s "Carbon Free Island 2030" initiative aims to convert all transport and household electricity to renewables by 2030. Hydrogen generated from this project will be used to advance this goal.

The strategic alliance established in 2018 between Bloom Energy and SK Ecoplant has bolstered the two companies' respective market leadership positions in the hydrogen economy and power generation on a global scale. Bloom Energy and SK Ecoplant have deployed 400 MW since the beginning of the partnership.

What is a solid-oxide electrolyser?

A solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) is a device that uses electricity and heat to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. SOECs operate at high temperatures, typically between 500°C and 850°C.

This hot environment allows for efficient water splitting using less electricity compared to other electrolysis methods like polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. SOECs can be used in various sectors, including renewable energy integration, green hydrogen production for transportation and industry, and even carbon capture and utilization.

About Bloom Energy

Bloom energy Cell

Bloom Energy is an American company that manufactures and sells solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that produce electricity on-site. SOFCs are a type of fuel cell that uses a ceramic electrolyte to convert chemical energy from a fuel source, such as natural gas or hydrogen, into electricity. Bloom Energy's servers are designed to be highly efficient and reliable, and they emit no greenhouse gases or other pollutants.
